Frame suggestions

  • I’m planning to build a single speed for my wife. Any suggestions on where to get a (cheapish) frame? The criteria is that it should be all white, have horizontal dropouts and have drillings for brakes, both front and back.

  • with a user name, you're asking for suggestions?

  • Hi all, gonna jump in on this thread.

I'm fairly new to SS biking, have had a Langster for two months now and love riding it, have clocked up 500km in 20 rides.

I am already think of my next singlespeed. I would like to have a more modern looking frame than the Langster. My main riding is done on a MTB (about 3500km per year), and I must admit I prefer the sloping look rather than the straight or anti sloping look.

The single is for riding around the country side as I live in the sticks and for when I don't want to ride off road with the MTB, rides are mostly between 30 and 60km trips. I don't ride fixed, using only freewheel and two brakes : don't slag me to much :) I want to stay with 700 size wheels, I do not want a MTB SS frame that is for 26" wheels, price range up to 500 / 600 £ for the frame.

The next bike I shall build up myself as I have done so with my MTBs but being new to singlsespeeds, I would love to have some suggestions for some frames, as its a whole new world to me and am rather a newbie.

    Many thanks in advance

  • Bump,

    No ideas anyone ?

The S works Langster is so sexy but no brake fittings holes, thats the style of frame that I'm looking for

  • This...

    ...then this...

    ...then this...

    ...or maybe this.

  • Oh and fwiw if you want brake holes, just get them drilled.

  • Hi thanks for the links, I found one that seem to be just perfect : On-One Pompino Frame with forks, if anyone has any commenst, I would love to read them.

Am looking at gettings Mavic Open Pro rims with DT spokes and Goldtecs hubs as well, This I thinks should make a real nice set of wheels, again any comments ....

  • That wheel set is very nice. If you call goldtec they can leave a set of the hubs silver. Dont get pewter goldtecs as they are inconsistant colour wise.

  • Thought that I would go with the black rims and hubs, just not sure if I want silver or black spokes though

Though will the black rims and hubs go with the choclat coloured frame and forks, or maybe I should go for the white frame

  • If you like sloping top tubes maybe a pompino or cotic roadrat? I only say these because I wouldn't have minded these for my last build but I prefer a horizontal top tube for a more traditional look so didn't choose them (if you see what I mean?).

  • I was told that silver spokes are stronger. don't know how much truth there is in that but hay. I think the open pro cd finish is pretty nice as the braking surface is less obvious.

  • I'm sure there might be an argument to say that the process of colouring the spokes might weaken them. But I think it's bollocks.

Re silver spokes, they're cheaper, but imo with brown an all back wheelset will look better. White, its moot. If it was black, silver or a bright colour then silver spokes look cool.

  • I heard that about silver spokes too...

  • Chocolate Brown Frame = Silver rims/Spokes/Hubs. With gum wall tyres. Yum.

    Black will be weird

  • Yeah I'm a little worried about the black & brown match, think maybe I will go for the white frame (my Langster is white, and it's ok) then with black rims, spokes and hubs it should look nice

Problem with black spokes is they are SO expensive (DT Competition DB black),

I'm thinking about getting them built by http://www.yogarup.com/wheels/
