I never did it but after drilling you add a new thread that you screw in the hole. To have the right diameter you just have to choose the right thread insert.
For the right pedal it should work as it goes clockwise. (dunno if they do anti-clockwise threads).
And they say it becomes stronger than the original aluminum thread...

For the price of all of the tools it is most likely cheaper to buy a chainset. Good idea though!

If that is the mighty crank, then rest assured it does what it says on the tin. Me Greg and taxi have used that one crank over about 18 months and it's still ok. In better nick than my 'freeride' slx cranks with 20mm bash guard, in fact. Listen not to the naysayers :)

helicoils are great they work really well use them all the time at work but yeah buy the time you have brought all the bits you need you may as well got a new crank arm
