I've run the cable into the top on my girlfriend's ladies frame. It doesn't look as nice but you can still lock up the rear. It's just a cheap diacompe BMX caliper too, nothing fancy. Try it and see how you like it, you've got nothing to lose.
What brakes have you got BTW? If you're thinking of changing calipers I'm in need of a cheap upgrade on my beater.

Tektro r730s. About £30 a pair.
So I've been upgrading an old Dawes Fleur to take nice new dual pivot brakes, instead of the crappy Weinmann ones it has now.
The only problem is that modern calipers dont let you switch the anchor bolt and adjusting barrel to allow the cable to enter the caliper from below to allow optimal cable routing on a step through frame.
My options are:
Use the new caliper on the front (where it matters most) and the old one on the back. I don't really want to do this as matching calipers would look much nicer!
Modify the new rear caliper using some kind of wire stop, as on Sheldon Brown.
Run the brake cables into the top of the brake, and hope that the number of turns in the cable housing isn't too much of a problem. I've seen this done on a retail specialized, so maybe it'll be ok?
Buy new calipers. (They must be long reach) :(
