Replacing forks with a Campagnolo headset

Posted on
  • A bit of a novice question here but just wondering if someone could help me out. Was just attempting to replaces the forks of my De Rosa and got the majority of the headset off with no problems. Then I got to this bit which is kind of part rubber, part metal. It just won't come off! there's seemingly the same bit at the bottom of the headset.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that often Campagnolo headsets require some sort of tool to get a piece off - is this it? I just can't see how pulling it rigorously could do it any good. Any suggestions?

PS I'm sorry if this is a commonly asked question, I've searched and not found but apologies if I've missed something blatant.

  • Do you mean the headset cups? They look like this

There's one on the bottom of the fork steerer tube too. They're pressed on. The most common tool to remove them is a pipe with a flared end like this:

You can make one really easily with a bit of pipe and a hacksaw. Put it in the frame, gently tappy tap with a soft mallet and out come the cups. It's a good idea to give them a few hours (or overnight) soaking with preferably Plusgas, or WD40/GT85, just in case they've been in there for a while. You can even use a big flathead screwdriver, although there's more chance of damaging the cups.

The one on the fork can be removed with a ring-shaped tool, or a big adjustable spanner placed over it (wrap it in old inner tube to stop it scratching the cup), and again gently tapped with a soft mallet.

To reinstall, support the frame or forks on a block of soft wood, and just tap them in with the same soft mallet. Grease them first.

  • Thanks for all of that but no, its not the headset cups. Its like a sort of rubber/metal wedge. I think its number 5 on this picture:

But I will take photos to confirm. I have to get the bus today, FML

  • get a screwdriver into the headtube, feel the edge, then gentle tap with a hammer, moving around the inside. eventually it will pop out

  • Putting a headset where the forks were would make it hard for the wheels to attach to the bike.

  • ^ yeah like 31 said, you can use the same tools and method to remove that as you would the cups.

  • That worked, thanks a lot! Only problem is, there's one on the bottom of the fork which I can't get off now.. any suggestions?

  • You talking about the crown race?

Put the forks in a vice and gently tap it with a hammer screw driver combination until it loosens

Be very careful if you plan to use the crown race again. If not a few hard smacks will free it

  • Thanks, will try this when I get back.

    You mechies are very kind!
