  • Could be doable on fixed. The considerations are that while French roads don't tend to be steep (unless you hit some serious back roads) they can be long. In the case of the alps, this can be very long. Whilst that will be fine on the ascents in the right gear, it can be restrictive on the descending. I've done some touring around that area and coming out of places like Sospel and Grasse, it's perfectly possible to be doing long fastish descents that last for 20-30 minutes. I certainly wouldn't want to be doing that on a fixed climbing gear.

    I'd advise going free with as large a fixed as your chain will go to on the other side for those flat days in the north and being a fixie skidder on the coast.
