Worst repair jobs

  • I was brought a bike today (which I shall talk about in a minute) which had such an awful repair job on it It got me thinking, what was the worst repair jobs I'd ever seen? This bike happened to be up there on my list, but I'm sure people have seen worse so please share.

This is my first submission; A friend brought me his 'new bike' too look at, as he felt he might have damaged the thread on his wheel (turns out hes stripped it but thats another story), when he called me he mentioned that he'd been given a Brian Rourke for free so I was quite looking forward to seeing it. Sure enough it turned out to be quite a nice frame (531 with campag dropouts and a Campag headset too).
Sorry about the Photo quality, I only had my phone.

On closer inspection I noticed something 'amiss' with the chains stays...

Turns out he'd noticed a crack in the chain stay and asked his dad to repair it, which he did by using buckets of solder and a pieces of copper pipe...
He doesn't seem to mind but personally theses no way I'd ride is, it can't be safe!

Anyway has anyone got anything better? or should I say worse?

  • my mate cazzy trying to fix a puncture with gaffer tape

  • Rourkie on here is Brian Rourke cycles......give him a shout to see if he can quote your mate for fixing it.......that looks proper shite. I don't reckon it would cost more than about 80 notes ish to sort it properly.........

  • We had a plumber who welded a Brian Rourke to the side of the hot water tank in the airing cupboard after a pipe leaked. You turned the cranks and the water came out of the headset to fill the bath.

    Or did I dream that?

  • A friend of mine mentioned that her brakes didn't work very well. Turns out she had already taken her bike to Halfords because the brakes weren't too good. They quoted her 70 quid to replace the levers, new inner and outer cables and new pads. She was skeptical but they said she couldn't legally ride her bike on the road in the condition it was in, so she went ahead (she's french so doesn't know about this kind of thing).

I had a very quick look at the bike and they a) hadn't replaced the outer cables and they were very obviously the original 80s ones and b) they had used v-brake levers with caliper brakes and c) the rear brake was so out of adjustment that you couldn't make the rear wheel skid even when pushing the bike along.

Would've taken it back to Halfords but this was six months ago and she doesn't have the receipt. 15 minutes in the garage with some spare levers and cables I had lying around and it all works properly now. The worst thing was that it's the Halfords where I was once the cycle mechanic, about three years ago.

Also my ex-LBS refused to fix (i.e. new bolt) the mudguard on my girlfriend's bike while I was away. No reason, they just flat out refused. Bigger fish to fry. We don't go there any more.

  • BLIMEY NICE WORK!

Doe's he want an apprenticeship!! Or shall I hunt him down and shoot him LOL.

Seriously. It just needs a pair chain stays putting in it, believe it or not that fantastic repair work won't have done it any damage to the rest of the frame.

1 pr of stays around £90 fitted and a respray and stickers around £100 depending on how flash.

The frame probably cracked due to being chromed and then not looked after.

Are you sure it wasn't a chip shop?

Thanks very much for that, I'll tell him and hopefully he'll get in contact with you. Oh and I presume you meant £90 for the repair and another £100 for the respray? unless you're the most value'tastic respray place around

yes £90 + £100 I'm cheap but not that cheap

Always thought there was something fishy about the owner, he's never exactly full of pith and vinegar. I guess he just had a chip on his shoulder about working on such a battered bike; not really worth his salt. I go to a different plaice now and their service is brill.
