Good point with regards to GZIP. It's been a long time since I read what it actually did :-)
With regards to the HTML optimisation Reducing the actual number of tags is still going to help isn't it, so things like removing
and
will improve matters. It will also speed up client-side rendering and you can lose a few CSS rules along the way.
The point still stands with regard to the other markup issues from a semantic standpoint:s are wrong for the forums list (should probably be ul), and the footer tags should be what groups the lists and headers, not surrounding s
all those
And is a container element, not a heading element, so the correct use is something like:
Heading
Subheading
Some precis paragraph about the page content
Google will give you even more points for using the new markup correctly* :-)
*till next month when the HTML5 spec changes again.
