Yes, it's a good phone.
It has a good function for cycling called "my tracks", which records your route, together with data such as elevation, speed, etc., via GPS.

re battery life - the good thing about android devices (compared to apple) is that you can buy spare batterys for about £25. On my nexus 1 (the model before the desire), I get pretty good battery life. "my tracks" works fine for a 5 hour ride on one charge.
