• New to this, I am quoted £165 for a set of Halo Aerorage wheels at my LBS. I was not going to spend that much so I am wondering what to do.

Any alternatives I should consider or are these good value?

  • I run them, and they are awesome for the money. I would recomend them to any nivice rider, and for a factory built wheel set, they are ideal!

  • Seems reasonable.

I've been using them for 18 months in all weathers and mine are still running smooth and true.

    Mine also cost £120 ish.

  • Just buy those ones for under £100 from Varno.

Unless you're after funny colours I can't of a reason to spend over £100 untill you go +£200 on a new build.

  • Buy the Halo rims off ebay for £55, £30 on Planet x track hubs and about £30 on double butted spokes instead of the plain guage they use on the factory builds. Get someone to build for beer.
You'll have a cheaper, stronger, lighter wheelset.

  • If you do that ^ I'd go for ACI double butted spokes from cycle basket that come in at more like £20.

Altho like I said with varno selling hand built wheels to that price I'm not sure I'd bother with the time delay and arsing about if you're just after a black/silver wheelset.

  • The Varno option might be the best one. Will check out the classifieds also.

  • I've been testing the Condor Unos for the last few months - handbuilt and they ride damn well

  • Planet X wheels - under £100 job done!

  • Planet x hubs +1, Most hubs around this price point are very similar.

For £165 ish you could just about get a set of diacompe grande compes on mavic open sports.

  • thanks for the info...Varno option is noted.

  • Gran Compe hubs are only £25 each from On-One/ Planet X
