Beater for Japan?

Posted on
  • Gonna be in Nagoya for 2/3 weeks work trip -would be good to get hold of a beater for the shortish trip between hotel and work -any tips/spare bikes to borrow or buy?

  • I'm fairly confident I'm not making this up...

A friend told me once, apparently it costs money to dispose of bikes in Japan, so a lot of people try and give them away. Apparently a good source was the back of the free gaijin mags you might find lying around....

  • ask corny, he went there recently on his tour of bikeword.

Sweet, thanks, but bit of double edged sword that one - what will happen when I get to the end of my time and want to get rid? Presumably there is some sort of disincentive for abandoning them if there is a cost associated with disposing of them. (Could always chuck it in the hold...)

  • why not take your own?

  • too much hassle. but would have the time and inclination to bring one back -as taking a few days off to have a look-see once work is done.

  • You tried the Gaijin Pot forum or their classifieds? Quick search on there found this. It's hire though...

  • I live in Osaka. You can pick up a new "mama-chari" (AKA mother's bike, EVERYONE rides these as they are so cheap that if it's nicked or taken for being illegally parked, you can just buy a new one) for around 6000 yen (try conan) or if you want a fixed/ss then try yahoo auctions though the delivery timelag involved might make it impossible. if I can help more (reading websites or whatever), let me know. phew thats a lot of brackets.

  • go to donki.

cheap folding bikes, mamachari all sorts pretty cheap. you can get nicer bikes from tokyu hands department stores but they will cost more.

if you have someone to help who speaks the language then you should be able to get something extremely easily.

  • thanks all!!

  • if you buy one of these i'll be first dibs when you ship it back and sell it

  • There is a cost associated with disposing of them、but it will only cost 300yen-1000yen.
