Beater for Japan?

I'm fairly confident I'm not making this up...

A friend told me once, apparently it costs money to dispose of bikes in Japan, so a lot of people try and give them away. Apparently a good source was the back of the free gaijin mags you might find lying around....

Sweet,thanks, but bit of double edged sword that one - what will happen when I get to the end of my time and want to get rid? Presumably there is some sort of disincentive for abandoning them if there is a cost associated with disposing of them. (Could always chuck it in the hold...)
