Chain Tensioner or Frame?

  • I think I have the Chain line pretty sorted, but iis my chain tensioner out of shap, or more likely - my gear hanger bent?
I didn't notice it before the build, but the tensioner seems to push the chain off line as it runs through? See Pic.

  • i did some drawing:

looks like the angle of your dropout is straight vertical, but the gear hanger is slightly bent and the angle increases on the hanger. Not sure I´m right, what do you guys think?

  • I've had this on my MTB before, and it was the gear hanger which I replaced. There seems to be a slight kink towards the bottom, just above the scratch.

  • When I had a similar problem with my hacked-up derallieur tensioner I grabbed it and bent it (and the dropout) slightly with my hand till it looked OK - no harm done (except slightly looser der. pivots) Are you worried about breaking something? It'll be fine - looks like you have a floating jockey wheel, right? so as long as the axle is horixontal it should line up where you want.. (If you try and srtaighten the dropout without the trensioner in then it might not screw back in easily if the threading gets skewed)
    ^good effort kboy!

  • That gear hanger looks bent to me. Looks like fixed is the way to go :P

edit: unless it's vertical dropouts which it looks like from behind.

  • Yup, it's a floating jockey wheel, I tried to bend it without the tensioner - but no joy (only the little chip!!! Arggg) will try some manipulation with it in place. Like you say Kboy, it don't look much, but the angle really increases on the hanger!

  • get two adgustable spanners. One on the gear hanger and one on the drop out to stop that getting bent, be gental and a straight chian will come to you.

  • Ah, good idea fella, I made the mistake of using pipe grips last night (covered the frame but still chipped it!!) but it just wanted to bend the entire drop out!
Will have to invest in an adjustable spanner or 2. Cheers.

  • Hello, this is my first post on this forum so be gentle. I have exactly the same setup as the OP, but without such a bent gear hanger; my problem is a bit different, at the moment I have a 15 tooth cog on the back, and it currently takes several noisy seconds of the chain skipping forward to get going, and when you're stopping at traffic lights (of which there are plenty in Berlin) this can get f**ing irritating.
Would I be right in thinking that a better chain tensioner (one with two jockey wheels for example) might fix the problem?
This is one that looks promising, what do you reckon?

  • OP - just bend it.

Passmore. What are the relative ages of the chain and sprocket?

  • The chain and sprocket are both brand new.

  • what width is the chain and sprocket?
