the police are now making a concerted effort to crack down on the brick lane bike thieves. They cannot do it alone and we should give them all the assitance we can. -

contact details for the cops on the street
mob. number 07768 928 456
or for less urgent stuff e-mail cycletaskforce@met.police.uk -

Good stuff, Julian. Perhaps the contact details could be made a sticky somewhere so that people don't have to search for long to find them?

the team have made three arrests via gumtree ads, have recovered 53 stolen bikes and have arrested traders on brick lane market. they have the power to levy £1,000 fines on illegal traders and can ban individuals from the markets and it's environs
at last something is being done -

i'm gonna keep bumping this daily / weekly unless anyone has any problems with that
these guys are here to help break the bike thefts rings we should assist them all we can and end the heartbreak -
• #9
Well, I do think that it should be a sticky (ideally with their contact details in the OP)--PM Velocio?

I agree totally, I think there should be a "what to do if your bike is stolen" similar to the accident thread...
Something along the lines of
(a) report it to the police (with all the relevant contact details)
(b) put a post in the stolen bikes thread
(c) check brick lane etc
(d) check the locks thread before getting a new bike
(e) see advice on securing seat posts etc
(f) follow up police details
etc etc -

i was thinking along the lines of a thread where we have a list of things stolen between the MOnday and the following sunday
No chat just bikes parts / bikes / bits that have been stolen, one nice easy to print of list that the police could take with them to Brick Lane every Sunday and have a look for the parts / bikes / bits. It is the proving that the bikes parts are indeed listed as stolen that holds the police back.I.e thread would go as follows
Monday 27th September to Sunday 3rd October
- Brooked Swift ( BLack ) ( details of any distinctive marks etc. )
- Cinelli MAsh frame and forks
the police could theoretically print of a nice simple list of bits they could keep an eye out for during their rounds of Brick Lane on a Sunday.
I will PM Dave and see if he is OK with us adding yet another stolen bike thread as we do have a few already. Anything we can do to assist the Task Force would be welcomed by them.

Julian, if this (or some other thread, perhaps the 'What to do in case of theft' thread that you suggested, containing the contact details) was a sticky you wouldn't have to bump this all the time. I think I'll start one. I don't have all the tips, but hopefully people will chip in and we can collect all the necessary information in the OP.
Good to see they are doing something about it, but I feel a bit more consultation with London cyclists would aid their efforts. Hopefully it's not just a big PR stunt to coincide with the new bike-hire service.
