Would one of these models make a good tourer? (Mudguards + racks) maybe the mileater?

There's a fair amount of Viking cycles on eBay at the moment, brand new, like this one:
They're pretty cheap... which is what I'm after, a cheap commuter bike. But, are the bikes actually any good? Bear in mind, I need it for basically a 10-15 minute cycle ride in London, twice a day.
(I am pretty clueless about bikes)

i would say any viking made after 1980 will be a £ 99.99 halfords bike
the quality happened back in the 50's 60's and 70'si think

Tomanaldo / Dicki, if this site is factually correct :
http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/Museum/Transport/bicycles/Viking.htm
... then they ceased production on classic Vikings in 1967. The company was then sold to Americans who restarted it in Ireland, but it is basically an assembly line company now using parts from elsewhere, a different thing altogether. I didn't know at the time but Vikings were made in my hometown by someone with the same last name as me. Davies is a common name though...
I have a 60's Hotellier frame with original paintwork that my friend gave to me this summer. Its a bit scratched in places, but good condition... I love it. The 'Hotellier' decal is particularly pleasing as Im a retro typography nerd.

@ Goreggiego .... that frame is beautiful! http://sargentandco.com/files/images...n%20valley.jpg
I wanted to do a black and white two-tone on mine, exactly like that in my head... but the paint work is still in too good condition to mess with I think. Im gonna get another one!

Yeah. actually, one just sold on ebay earlier. A red one.
Dublin, that's interesting... are they the old ones or the new ones? The new ones would make more sense.

Or does it have to be a specific Viking one?
-
• #39
it just needs to be one that fits

Those ones from CR are threaded most of the way, so they'll definitely fit. Just a case of chopping off the excess if you have a very skinny clamp thing.

check out this beauty viking bros
I got into an eBay bidding war with Rob Sargent for a Severn Valley a few years ago. I think that frame might be what's left of it. Damn, I wanted that bike. Ended up with my Austro-Daimler Vent Noir. It may not be English, but I still love it...

Hi
I have recently acquired my dads old Severn Valleys frame and forks and have dropped some old wheels he had laying around in.
The forks are not in the best condition and rake fowards quite steep, are there any alternatives that are gusseted in a similar fashion with less rake?
I would quite like to restore it and convert to fixed as I have never owned a geared bike.
Any advice on doing this?
Thanks in advanceAlex

Anyone know where I can get Viking decals (late 50's era)? Any help appreciated. Cyclomondo don't have them but it would be good to get the non water slide ones as they will be going onto a powdercoated and lacquered frame.
hillary stone has a severn valley for sale
painted badly but as his description states
" The Severn Valley was Viking’s top model and was essentially their Team Replica model as raced by the Viking Team in the 50s and 60s. This frame it thought dating from c1958 is in very sound condition. It has been powder coated. It will make an excellent singlespeed or fixed conversion £89 "
