Hi Guys,
I'm a new member so go easy with me.
I have been doing some research on Road Aces and i'd like to let you know that i have had one from new. Must be about an 84. Its in storage at the moment but i'm going to try to get a look at it this weekend. I've kept her always intending on one of my three kids having her. I was going to service her up and check its all operating ok and pass it on to my 13 year old son. But its looking like needs must and i might be thinking of selling her. Its totally original and from memory, is mint. I totally loved this bike and i was a bit anal as a kid, so used to clean it after every ride hence it been mint. After reading some of the info on this site i'm slightly confused about a couple of things though. I dont think mine has the tubs. I think it has 700c's with tubes? (supplied with them when new)) I also seem to think i remember it having campagnolo forged drop outs? (what ever they are) could be wrong and will check it out this weekend. I hope its not picked up any marks whilst in storage.
regards

wow, random to stumble across an old posting of mine coming back to life...
Interested to find out more about this Road Ace - FYI I have owned 20+ of this model, one of which looked like it came with Mavic G40 rims from new, these are the clincher version of GP4's and are quite hard to find... it looked to me like someone specced them from new as an upgrade from their local bike shop.
On the Campag drop outs, I have seen this before too on Road Ace frames (which should have Gipiemme road ends) - Raleigh made lots of different frames out of 531c tubing all to the same spec and at the last moment defined the model with the correct braze ons and paint etc so from what I can gather if there were a bunch of frames with Campag drop outs ready to go, they got painted as Road Aces and sent off...
PM me if you want more idle Road Ace blurb, but yeah cool bike IMO.

From Road Ace...I've got a road ace bottle cage, a shortish 80 mm 600 AX stem as new, and original Mavic sprints on AX hubs with 6 speed cassette if anyone's in need...:-)

I have an "Ice Green" Raleigh Record Ace 12
http://bulgier.net/pics/bike/Catalogs/Raleigh83/ral83_05.jpg
The specs are as per the orginal: Campag Gran Sport derailleurs, Cinelli handlbars, Weinmann concave rims on Mavic hubs. The only non-original equipment (besides the waering parts) are the brake leavers, which i changed for Shimano 105 with concealed cables when using as my winter training bike. Not sure of frame size - but i am 6ft 2, with a 35 inch inside leg....so likely to be 64 cm.
I bought the bike in '89 from the original owner and rode it reguarly for training and traithlons for 5 or 6 years. It then became the winter bike, and for the last 15 years has been garaged - save for the occasional spin and wipe down.

What is the groupset on this one mate?
Looked at the road ace last weekend and shes not looking bad at all. The chain needs a bit of attention and other than that prety ok considering her age :-) i.d forgoten that id had to put two stickers on the cross bar where id managed to make two tiny scatches on her but the worst bit is that she now has a little dent in the cross bar too :-( that will teach me to leave stuff in storage for so long. I think she might be newer than i thought too on defo has tubed tires on weinman (sp) rims.

I don't. Confusing thread. Apologies. It's a bit large for me. If you can magically shrink it by 10cm I'll give you all the tea in China for it.

In fact that reply referred to twigatoes raleigh. As I said, confusing thread.
Here's my Raleigh Road Ace 1984 model (22.5")
The one bike I said I would never sell... it took buying Road Aces in double figures to be able to piece one together this good in my size (22.5").
I've since acquired an '85 Colnago Master which I have fallen for big time, so the Road Ace is sadly for the chop.
Groupset is all Shimano 600AX, with Dura Ace AX bars. Mavic GP4 rims, Iscaselle saddle. It's very original, the bar tape is what it left the shop with. The bike has done zero miles since I have owned it, all NOS has been fitted but not ridden.
Following items are NOS:
There are a few tiny 'upgrades' which are:
And one spec error:
The remainder are the best of parts I sourced from buying double figures of Road Aces... most Road Aces you will find are in very poor shape these days with the key components coming off worst.
Frame is free from dents and is the second smartest frame I have ever seen, the only one that bettered it was too big for me.
The bike was not fully stripped, so has the potential to clean up better than these pictures show, bottle cage has since been removed and no I don't have the original Aero AX bottle - but if you can find one expect to pay £35-50 for a used one!:
