7 speed advice

  • after some help please.

    i have just purchased an old groupset, it's a Shimano 600 Ultegra groupset, 7 speed indexed. this one in fact:

    i'll be building it up on my old road frame, a raleigh mtrax.

    missing parts are wheels, cassette, headset and bottom bracket.
    last 2 of those not a problem, i has knowledge of those and i know the wheels i'll purchase.

    could someone please suggest a suitable 7 speed cassette?
    and also can someone help with an explanation of fitting it to a now standard 8/9/10 speed shimano hub? i am going for new wheels, shimano hubs.
    i believe you need one of these?

    does that simply fit on the hub before fitting the cassette?

  • TO run 7 speed on a 8 /9 / 10 speed hub you just need a spacer on the back of the cassette. 2.5 mm I think but not 100% sure, just experiment until the cassette is secure.

  • I can't see that it matters whether the spacer is on the outside or inside...? But I'm not expert.

    You just need to make sure that your limit screws are set up right, otherwise you'll be slinging the chain offa the cassette willynilly.

  • Inside is better due to knurling on lockring and outside cog.

  • if you have 12t as smallest cog spacer can go in or outside. 11t smallest cog doesn't slide along so spacer needs to be inside.

    you may as well put anther cog with thinner spacer in there instead of just the spacer

    you can get a large cog and pu tit in there where the spacer goes and if you're using down tube or bar end levers you can find that last cog on the mech stop even though it's not indexed. mine's like that : 32t 9 speed cog, small spacer - then the whole 28 to 11t 7 speed cassette. so i'm effectively running 8 speeds on 7 speed spacing - things just happened that way

    i got the
    32t cog for free off worn cassette in LBS - the 32t wasn't worn as bad as the others.

    i don't have a cassette as yet.
    are you saying the shifters, which are down tube, will find the 8th cog if i just used an 8 speed cassette?
    also would the rear mech be ok with the extra movement?

  • you can use 7 shifter with 8 speed and vise versa , (7spd = 5.0mm movement at mech per shift, 8 spd is 4.8mm ) a 7 shifter on an 8 cog or vise versa would only be .6mm or.7mm out on the smallest and biggest cog - such a small difference it won't mater (4% out - chain stretch, out cable compression, inaccuracies in the cassette, hub, chain, shifters,mech, woble of jockey wheel , flex of frame etc. will be way beyond that 4% anyway.)

    if you use 7 speed shifter with 8 speed cassette. you'll get no click for the biggest cog - but it will stop in the right place on the mech stop - just like any friction system would (a friction system is effectively indexed on the smallest and biggest cogs - by the mech stop )

    best really to go with 7 speed as you have the shifters. the 7 spd shifter will find an eighth cog at any spacing because you'll not be using indexing at the lever but the stop on the rear mech to position it. the rear mech will go that far no probs. and the shifter will easily and safely go beyond it's final click (effectively becoming a friction shifter for anything after it's number - so on 7 spd shifter after its 7th click the shifter acts like a friction shifter.)

    what range you looking at? i whacked another one in becasue it was free and i couldn't find a 11-32 7 speed block , i was setting up a wide range for a tourer 11-32 and 28/38/48 . you have a short mech and maybe are looking for racing gears. i'd set up the 7 speed with a spacer at a ratio you like and fits in the rear mech (11-23 or 12-24 maybe 12-26 something like that)and then you're sorted with a correct and ridable set up.

    as an 8th cog sneaked in may have to be put it in at a slimmer spacing you may need 8 o r 9 speed chain to make that bodge work.

    i'd set it up all stock on gears you like with the spacer at the rear and you can mess with it later once you can get a 28t cog for free - and if that doesn't work or the mech won't take up that much chain you're fine to forget about the melding at no cost or detriment to the set up..

    will give me a whole load more gearing options than the fixed.
