Web based interface for ftp servers

  • I know there are some IT boffins on here.

I normally access the server I use at work with Cyberduck and I'm perfectly happy with that. However, many of the muppets who are supposed to supply me with video and image files are not comfortable with it. Especially if they are over 40 years old. I am spending far too much time discussing why a large batch of 80mb files cannot be sent by e-mail etc.

Does anyone know of a web-based interface I could send these people trough somehow? I.e. I keep my server on the current ISP, but I can link it up to a web based user interface for example. Or should I find another ISP who lets people access over web? If so which?

    Cheers.

  • Use Drop Box?

  • Yeah setup a shared dropbox area for them to copy into. Though if they have problems with files, even that might be difficult for them.

  • drop.io is nice, not really ftp but should work just as well

  • we use dropbox internally. I am thinking of setting up something for people who cannot even do that.

there's always a deadline and I hate having to explain this stuff two hours before it has to be in.

  • I used one a while ago - i think it may have been.... http://www.net2ftp.com/

Let me know how you get on.

  • .... http://www.net2ftp.com/

thanks, that's the stuff. let's see if the muppets can manage it. they could have made the user interface even more idiot proof though. such as not adding options like "ssl" and "binary" which increases the risk of muppets panicking.

  • The most idiot-proof ftp interface I've found is Dropbox, especially when using it locally, through the OS; treat the Dropbox folders as local folders, drag and drop files into said folders, share public links with a right click on the files/folders you want to share, paste it into an email.

It's a little more complex when sharing private folders, but even then it's far easier than most ftp software/browser interfaces.

  • Another vote for dropbox here. If you can set up everything for them It's pretty much idiot proof**

    **Not a proven fact.
