• Mcc-tester has mentioned this a few times. But its better to have at least a slim spacer above the stem. Otherwise the stem clamp wil be trying to 'walk' the stem off the steerer. This prevented by the headset cap, but it is still not an ideal situation.

    I cant see any reason to have spacers under the stem, other than to raise it for fit.

    I tend to set everthing up. mark the total length, and cut. I then remove 0.5 - 1 mm more steerer with a metal file (also removing any sharpe edges). to allow the headset adjuster to push on the spacer.
