  • I think with things like this it is less about your ability to pay than your financial priorities.

    I don't have a car, for example; which lots of people don't seem to understand is even possible. Most people find the £3k or so a year needed to run a car without a second though, but might be shocked that I spend £800 - £900 a year on cycling gear (no idea what it actually is, don't really want to know).

    I had the same when I lived in London. Bought a £900 bike and colleagues thought that was crazy - despite me using it to get to work every day of the year, instead of the £1,200 tube pass they bought every year.
