The guy wants a 1x10 set up and some advice and he got that, I think it is a setup that works well for commuting and medium length rides. Do we know what kind of riding the fella is doing? Surely that would effect his choice of transmission more than the extra wear on the cogs due to the extra cross chaining, which is an inevitable side effect of this setup. I have this setup on one of my bikes and enjoy riding it which is surely what it's all about. I'm going for a pedal.
Toodle pip
Thanks for pointing that out, it was all getting a bit crazy! I should have called the post "Is using more than one gear mental!" This particular bike is just for use around town, commuting, etc which I have been doing daily for 13 years, so I am not some numpty trying to jump on a bandwagon. Neither am I a complete expert, so I am not afraid to seek advice and opinions on areas for improvement. For some reason the mere suggestion of running 1x10 has caused outrage for some, and it was never my intention to do so, although it is irritating when it gets condescending comments and accusations of being a bodge job, just because it's not fixed/ss! As a 35 year old product designer I understand all about coming up with the best solution for particular needs, so yes a single speed set-up is the most efficient mechanically, but take that up the mountains of Scotland and you will see why they don't use them there! Compromise doesn't = bodge, if it does then I must be guilty of a "bodged" marriage!
Anyway, all getting way too serious for what was supposed to be some light advice.
Also sorry posting it in the wrong area in the first place, it was an oversight on my behalf.
Like you say it’s too much of a nice day to waste any more of it going round in circles about such a thing!
