normally 8 speed is used for the strength of the chain on a tandem- 10 speed is lots weaker with its narrow width.
Again its strength and weight for wheels too- I have seen HED trispokes used, as well as disks on the back.
I'd have to say you'll probaly have lots of fun, but the bottom line may be that the frame isn't a racing one, and could suffer flex/whip etc that a one built for racing would be designed for specifically to minimise- there is a stronger design with extra tubing around the frame in parallel with the down tube.
My tip for what its worth, is to rummage through SJS web site- they are experts in tandems after all, maybe worth a chat there.
There's a CTC tandem section worthy of a look- you may be able to sell some of the discarded kit there too.
Good luck!

Depending on the details of the rear wheel, I may be interested in buying it off you.

El Diablo,
I hadn't even considered using a wide chain/fewer gears. Will definitely look into that.
The general idea with this is to produce a quick bike that we can use on long rides and perhaps give TT or racing a go, just to get a taste.
I think SJS and Edwardes in Camberwell are going get pretty well acquainted with this bike over the next month or so.
Horatio,
I'll ask Tom to measure up when he gets home. The drum brake may or may not be seized, we're going to open it up and take a look at some point. Otherwise the wheel's in a good condition.

2nd dibs on the rear wheel.

8 x a triple is good on the rear, drive on the left side.
a drag stirrup brake on the inside of the rear seatstays via another brake lever is good- eg via a handlebar control up the front. Not kosher, but works sufficiently for most circumstances

- Fizik Arione, preferably white
Specialized Toupe 143, preferably white- Light weight 27.2 seatpost for pilot, suitable for clamping rear stem to (not sure if carbon is the best idea for it).
White bar tapeLook Keo pedals, preferably red or white- Canti brakes that work with STIs
- Bottle cage TT saddle mount
Bottle cages, preferably 3 to 5 matching ones (3 for frame, 1 or 2 for saddle mounts)- 8/9/10sp Shimano or compatible STIs
- 8/9/10sp rear cassette (11-25 pref)
- 8/9/10sp derailleurs (rear will need to be long arm)
- Massive fuck-off chainring on the front, 57, 60?
- Toptube/frame bags
- A decent set of lights suitable for long overnight rides.
- Tri-bars (profile/bonty clip on style)
- Black stoker stem to fit on a 27.2mm seatpost
The first baby steps of progress. This tandem is going to be one
interestingmessy bastardisation. - Fizik Arione, preferably white

The cants on it will probably be fine with new pads cables e.t.c you could use any threadless stem with shims for a stoker stem you just need to decide how long it needs to be. Also I'd keep the cranks set as replacing will be mega pricey, maybe a clean up and replacement of any worn rings will be all that is needed.

did you get any further?

Canti brakes that work with STIs
Normal cantis work with sti levers only long pull i.e v-brake style cantis don't.
If you have the cash pauls components do a cantilever brake that it meant to be extra strong and good for tandems

Updated pic looks cool in a mental way!

KONIJN does have a set of Mini-V brakes. Could work with STI.
With a seat post shim 27.2mm to 31.7/31.8mm, you can use a lot of ahead stems for the stoker.
Why not trying an adjustable type first. to find out the correct length and position (Syntace VRO, Look Ergostem)? -

think I have a 52 or something like that chainring, looks quite big too me but maybe not what you're looking for. gonna check the size later and update.
Just about everything but the frame, which Tom (6pt) and I have just acquired:
Current plan is to get as much as we can from the forum, then get her modified, resprayed and built up by people who know what they're doing.
List of parts we need to get her to a competition-destroying standard:
(If someone's got a whole/most of a suitable group in Campag or SRAM then we'll certainly consider it)
Also need advice on wheelset/rear brake:
Current setup is pair of cantis on one lever and drum brake on the other. We want to replace with proper independent cantis and a disc on a third lever for long descents/emergency crashes. Anyone have experience adding disks brakes to a non-disk frame? The middle set of stays in the rear triangle might pose a problem.
Definitely need a new wheel set regardless, current ones are super heavy and particularly old. Any advice on what to look out for on tandems?
Not sure on hub width, will have to wait for Tom to measure up when he gets home.
