  • I emailed the organisers of the skyride asking if we could have an official bike polo prescence. The message got passed along to the council who have said they are happy to allocate a space at calthorpe park (as the route of the main ride passes there).

Im supposed to reply with details of the space we need to "display". I think we can choose something other than the basketball court if we like, like the side of the park near pershore road. Im probably the worst person to be overseeing this polo deal, if its going to happen its gonna need you lot who can actually play. All the mallets, cones and such. And if were doing it outside the court, then some kind of barriers perhaps to stop the ball.

    Good afternoon

I have been sent your details as I'm overseeing the Parks Area's for Sky ride

We do have space available in Calthorpe Park

    see above route

I could allocate an area for you to display etc

all I need is the size of the area you require and I can allocate an area

    Regards

  • good work shamim

i'm going to be away for a few weeks in canada, so i can't really help out with organising this. also, there's a tournament in bristol happening on the same day, so some people may be going there.

it would be cool to do something to try and push birmingham polo forward, but i think it needs to be on the court with people playing games to actually see what it's all about. is that where the route is?

if we could book the court for a few hours during the ride i'd definitely stay in brum to support.

  • You lot really need to tell me what the deal is. Can a few of you come for a polo deomonstration? They have allocated a space for us.

    Hi Shamim

I really need confirmation of your attendance

You will need to be on site between 8am and 8.30 as we have a site inspection at 9am

  • i thought this wasn't happening!

can you call them and see what space they've allocated? it's going to be tough to rally the troops this late in the day, but if it's necessary i'll try to get people together.

  • I just called Gary - he wasn't really too clued up about anything. I told him we'd really need to use the basketball court (I think he was under the impression it's played on grass) and he said we should just play there. I don't think it's possible to actually book the court at any particular time, but I'd think if we show up there from around 10-10.30am, we could play some games and hand out some flyers?

I asked him to tell Irene(?) to un-allocate any area she had booked, so we're basically off-the-hook.

I'll come along, although I'm likely to be hungover. It'd be really good if we could get a full six players, plus maybe a few people to hand out flyers (void - i'm typing at yooouuuu).

I'll pester the usual candidates via text, and stick something on the polo thread.

I have to meet someone at the NEC at 11.30am who's coming up from St Albans to be part of the great Void's Genesis Day One Saga Of Bollocks.

Skyride will be a bunch of fatties who last rode a bike in 1975 anyway, far better to hand flyers out at gigs, at OYB, randomly on the street to cool people, I'm happy to do that.

Who arranges to meet at the NEC? It's like arranging to meet at Picadilly Circus, or Sutton Park, or the Sahara desert.

Skyride will certainly be full of fatties. Great!

  • He's coming up for a race with the LVRC there, but yeah it's pretty random.

  • Good work Dan, it looks like this might work.

Make sure you lot bring your polo t-shirts so when you are wandering around calthorpe park with a bunch of leaflets in your hand, people dont assume you are from the local chip shop.

I havent touched my trashed bike, the wonkyness is indimidating me. But Ill come for sure.

Does anyone want to also make use of the closed roads for a bit of a ride too? I tought it might be a good time to practice with spd's as everytime Ive tried them Ive slammed into something eventually.

  • just come shamim - we're going to need players to make 3 on 3 to show how the game works.

you want to practice with spds in a park or somewhere away from traffic. as void has mentioned, the skyride is going to attract all sorts of bike-handling numpties. i reckon polo will be safer. plus, it's a tiny route.

  • Can't you go in the tennis courts at Cannon Hill Park instead? I doubt many people will want to hang around Edward Road for long.

  • that's an idea we're thinking about for the future, but this weekend is a little late to sort something out.

  • how did it go?

  • reasonably well. we managed to play some good fast demonstration games and also find time for newbie-polo.

probably 50 people came to have a look, and if we're lucky, we may have one person who comes out to play again. if that happens, it'll have been a success.

it felt so strange playing that early in the day though - shadows in all the wrong places...

  • Brought my son to watch, but it was a bit fast for him. It's put me off too, last time I showed up I wasn't the only person incapable of hitting the ball and just cycling around trying to get in other people's way. Now you guys look like you know what you're doing!

  • sorry our (limited) improvement has put you off, but it's a strange sport whereby the people who like it really like it and hence show up regularly and play more aggressively. if brum bike polo grows just a little bit, we may start doing a night aimed specifically at beginners.

for what it's worth - a few people joined in and seemed to enjoy themselves. you'd be surprised how even a few newbies on the court slows things down.
