I did Cat & Fiddle hillclimb on 42/16 last year - too high for the bottom of the course and too spinny for the top.
Many years ago I did Pymm Chair hillclimb (near Whalley Bridge) - steep, steep, steep (1:4-ish). Went to the bike shop, bought the biggest sprocket they had, put it on my road bike, broke chain/wrapped it around small ring & big sprocket/rejoined it as tight as it would go (horizontal dropouts...), rode out and came third! i.e. I invented single-speed :)
