It made you wonder whether cycling would develop a militant undercurrent?

Uhuh, the reasoning was all explained in the first post

Sorry, I must be a fucking idiot because I have no idea what your thread is about.

Unless cycling gains the respect, approval, and understanding of the masses in the UK that it currently holds in certain other European countries, it will remain forever militant.
Any additional militancy would be either superfluous, or a form of affectation; or both.

Arguably it wasn't...

Has the OP not heard of Critical Mass? That's more than militant enough for me.
I feel sorry for straight edgers. When they wake up that's as good as they are going to feel all day.
Plus they seem quite annoyed with everything. Much like fundamentalist muslims I do wonder if they*might cheer up and calm down if they had a nice few pints of delicious ale and a hand-rolled Habana every now and then. -

Saying that, they probably feel a whole lot better than you first thing in a morning.

Had to look it up on Wikipedia:
'Straight Edge refers to a subculture of hardcore punk, which was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock.[1][2] In its simplest form, straight edge is a philosophy of staying clean and sober: meaning refraining from using alcohol, tobacco, and any other recreational drugs. For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, not using caffeine or prescription drugs'Wow - I am obviously old and way out of touch. Sticking to the man by staying sober. Scary.

not sticking it to the man, sticking it to societies expectations.

When I started to read about this straight edge stuff I didn't get it, now after a few more G&T's I think I understand it.
Bunch of weird kids running away from the circus to become accountants. Go get em boys. -

You mean they expected me to take drugs and shag about?
It was all part of their plan? To keep me distracted so I wouldn't notice what was really going on?
Damn them! Damn their eyes!

Straight-Edge is the new Puritanism, so it's hardly surprising that it arises in a nation founded by militant Puritans.

I've got a bunch of Crass and Electro-Hippies albums still, were they/are they Straight Edge too, or is is just an American thing?
I knew they were a little vegan, anti-establishment and not fond of major corporations but I had no idea I was meant to lay off the hedonism too.Honestly, youth is wasted on the young.

Either way the militancy in the video was obviously very positive, getting rid of drug dealers and giving the money they got from them to charities and honourable causes hardly seems like a waste
-

I dont understand though... is it suggesting that there will be some kind of band of cycling vigilantes who dont drink or take drugs, but are happy to beat the piss out of people?
Have you seen my slippers?
Anyone... ?

hmmm. I don't really want to drawn into an agruement on this, but I don't think things are ever that simple.

With straight edge they mostly become "edge breakers" when they become old enough to drink. So maybe eventually the hipsters riding brakeless will start riding with brakes and stop pushing bikes everywhere and start riding them.
It hasn't got anything to do with being straight edge, it was just that video that made me wonder if it would happen.
