On the topic of scary plane experiences= I was on a propeller aeroplane journey (only short and about 45 mins of flying) and it was my first time on a propeller aeroplane with only 3 other people on the flight besides my family(not including the air hostess and pilots) and I was sitting right beside the propeller so my window was just propeller blades.
I thought this was cool and was really excited for getting going and so the other prop got going on the other row across from me and we start moving. I kind of figured that the other one would start up in a couple of seconds, so when we started to taxi I began to get worried. At a point I thought we were on the actual runway with the engine still not running. The engine began to go after that and after it had started up it felt like it wasn't 20 seconds before we were taking off.
I'm not saying this was anywhere near as scary as the previous ones btw but its my only plane experience that has reduced me to shakes and near freakout and screaming at the pilots through the door level. Also, the next day when returning from our trip (which was shit btw) we landed in wind and rain and landed in a cross wind that made us buffer sideways and was intense (underlined for INTENSENESS). It was the last flight of the day so I got to high five the pilots on a nice landing on the way out.

i've had the aborted landing thing once. waiting for the bump of touch down only to hear the engines scream back up again. pilot just said "let's try that again."
It's shocking and reassuring at the same time to know how much abuse planes can take (there are videos of destructive tests on you tube). I did my work experience at Shorts Aerospace in Belfast where they put together lear jets. The wings on those are only held on my 6 bolts. big fuck off bolts but still only 6 of them.

A small number of bolts is normal. Illustrated is just the first thing I found a picture of, an A-10 Thunderbolt II, but IIRC the whole weight of the fuselage including up to 30 tons of weapon load hangs from the wing of a B-52 on just 4 bolts.
As you have to prove by computation that every bolt, and the structures on both sides of the joint which will transfer the fastener load, will never be overloaded in service, it's much easier to use a small number of large bolts rather than a large number of small ones.

Touching down in a field in Helmand, after having to abort the first landing because there was still shooting on the ground, and being the in the first pair of blokes out of he back of the chinook.
Down on one knee into a field full of poppies and surprisingly soft earth. All I could think was "mum would love to have a cutting of one of these.." -

Ha, I was wondering whether there were any servicemen on here to set us civvies straight about scary flying!
A friend from school qualified into fast jets, but turned it down in favour of combat helicopters on the basis that he'd see more action...scary flying on a whole new level.

While skydiving back home in Aus we had a little incident with a plane breaking in two... A friends 4 way team was stacking up in the door (like a small roll up garage door), with the cameraman already on the outside ready and filming. As the 'ready' shake was initiated and then the 1.. 2.. 3.. go to get the timing correct, he managed to somehow lift the flap holding his reserve pin in place, dislodging the pin from the reserve loop. As they (reserves) are spring loaded, it obviously caught the wind, pulling him out and wrapping his canopy around the tail. I've seen similar happen before, however usually the canopy dislodges, or you can cutaway with nothing much to worry about. for some reason, quite oddly really as this was a big plane for a dropzone (cessna caravan) the plane split in two leaving a full 12 (i think it was) still inside, including 3 fun first time tandems. Luckily however, this being a plane full of skydivers, everyone made for the exit at a great rate of knots and got the hell out of dodge. Everyone that is except for the pilot (also a skydiver) and another friend (nicknamed crash) sitting in the co-pilots seat. As Crash tried to make his way to the exit and the pilot initiated a mayday, turning the fuel lines off etc, this front half of the plane started a series of high-g flips and rolls, pinning them both inside. About halfway down (from 14,000ft) Crash managed to pull himself to the door and was thrown out on one of the rolls, unfortunately this same roll pulled the roller door closed behind him trapping the pilot (wearing a reserve chute himself). J, the pilot was trapped behind this door and struggling like hell to get it back up but could not, due to the high-g's. Luckily on yet another roll, the door released it's grip for a split second, allowing him too escape, very, very close to impact. So close in fact that his canopy ride was only around 10 seconds. He did say at one point he'd given up and was resigned to his fate, however he'd only just had his first daughter 2 weeks previously, thus giving him a great deal of incentive to live.
Unfortunately my friend who hit the tail died, although it was said on impact instantaneously. Epic win or epic fail, the plane managed to land (crash) in the middle of the runway about 100ft from the hanger/manifest etc.As a result of this accident, all roller doors have to now be fitted with some type of locking mechanism to hold the door open should a similar event occur again. And... all pilots of these caravans are now wearing reserve chutes for every load. J, our pilot, has done thousands in this plane without one as they are very safe, strong aircraft. The chute was not even his, a friend lent it to him a few days previously following the birth of his daughter. So a tragic incident that could have been worse, but hopefully the lessons learned will save countless others around the world in similar (very, very rare) circumstances.

I think that trumps the other plane stories, such a bittersweet story. Sorry to hear about your friend.

my friend did something like that to one of the people in his flat at uni, his mate rang up and said he was bringing a girl back, and could they tidy up his room for him before he got back. So naturally, they put gay porn on his laptop, a huge tub of vaseline, and a massive pile of condoms.
The girl walked in, and walked straight out. -
