I lived on mare street and regularly cycles would get stolen from he corridors and had 10K worth of motorbikes nicked behind two security gates.

I'd say get the least visibly "bling" nice bike you can (my Fuji looks fairly crummy and will look crummier when I get round to removing the anodising from the cranks but rides perfectly well for round-town bike). Then lock it with eg a Kyptonite Fahg or M18, perhaps with a mini lock to the other wheel. Chances are good that something more readily saleable and less well secured will be nearby.
Also, I see couple of references to ironic 'taches in this thread. Let it be known that there's nothing in the least ironic about some facial topiary to be found in the E postcodes ;-)

You have a proper gentlmans tache to be proud of.
There are many ironic attempts in the E postcodes, I'll get some photographic proof.

All this East London bullshit, is nothing but that.... bullshit.
Bullshit backed up by fact then.
Nearly every stolen bike thread is "kingsland road" this or "hackney" that. I appreciate you look after your own bikes, but it's a plain fact that more bikes get nicked in London's 'trendy' east end.

Too many haircuts in the east end.

Too many dicks on the dance floor

Maybe it's more satisfying for tea leaves if they rip off hipsters?

Poor choice, I'd have gone for
YouTube - "Carol Brown" (Choir of Ex Girlfriends) - Flight of the Conchords
Just for the way he sings shut up.

i highly sugest getting a beater, or even 2 bikes like me(2 fixed gears) ones OTP not much changed and is very shiney and sexy, im very carefull with that! only lock it in places its pretty hard to get away with and use my massive chain to, other is my new fixie conversion thats only cost me £30, its slower but more comfy, wider tires, risers, perfect for getting to work on the canal, i can leeve it locked up with a cheep tesco lock and i dont need to worry, plus most people here(my town) wouldnt want a brakeless roadbike and tbh it lookslike shit to the untrained eye

There are other factors as well - like a probably disproportionate number of people on this forum living in the East End and a disproportionate number of bars/pubs/venues/shops in the East End that people ride to and lock up outside of. Not many people are riding out to Tooting Bec or Putney or Acton, locking up outside, and spending an evening/night in a pub. In fact, most people riding to these places are riding home and putting their bikes in their flats.
That being said, lots of bikes get nicked in the East End. But if Peckham or New Cross becomes the next "cool" spot, you'll see the same thing there. And if you want to talk about violent crimes, the South isn't so nice anymore.

if you are so scared why not just get decent bike insurance? why do people on this forum hate bike insurance so much? it just gives me piece of mind that worst comes to worst, i havent pissed £800 against a wall
-

DON'T buy a lock, then you won't be tempted to leave it anywhere, because if it's a bike worth nicking, believe me the scumbags WILL nick it, or just trash it trying.
+1

This. Insurance is expensive, but no more so than a good lock every year. And it means you don't have to worry. Just make sure you understand the exclusions in the policy - most won't cover bikes that are left outside without an approved lock or after 23:00.

You have to keep it out of sight. Bolt cutters work great as does lock bumping.. to easy to get the security dismantled.

i had a really nice old (late 90's) carbon trek rd bike that had quite alot of scratches etc so i thought i would ratty it up some more. i like the idea of having a bike that looks like a piece of junk but is actually a really lite quick bike. i gave it a good servicing and then took of all the decals and gave it a really lite sand just down through the top layer of paint to the base coat and then gave it a really thin washy spray paint job. looks quite cool in a way but also def made it look less valuable was not stolen. anyway just an idea
I live in East London + I haz nice bikeS (IMO)= I still haz nice bikes.
I don't lock them outside, anywhere.
All this East London bullshit, is nothing but that.... bullshit.
Lock your bikes properly, of course bikes will still get nicked but the great majority of times
is the owners fault for not locking bikes correctly.
You bunch of racists
