Brake clearance issue

Posted on
  • Hello all,

So I've got this great frame with the clearances tighter than ya mum's bumhole. BUT I now need to fit a front brake and all the ones i've got are getting nothing but spoke.

Any suggestions for calliper brakes that can reach the rim of a tight clearance wheel??

    Cheers!

  • the Diacompe ones here (on the top right), same as i use, are low drop. Made for the job.

  • Measure the drop you need - those AGC300 ones Dylan pointed to are very short, but with very little adjustment, so your clearance needs to be just right to use them.

Although Sheldon no longer has drop bolts, he does have pictures which would allow you to get one made. Traditionally they are for extending brake drop, but there's no reason why you couldn't use them upside down, although you'd need to take care of clearing the lower headset race.

true, small vertical adjustment of about 7mm. Mine just scrapes in at full length :)

Know nothing really useful about the sheldon thing though.

  • cheers guys, didn't know these even existed.

so i've measured my drop and it's 35mm which is too short for short calliper brakes. also the headset is definitely gonna be a problem for sheldon's drop bolts. if anyone's got anything like that kicking around then pleeeeeease lemme know!

  • so ye, the Diacompe should work. definitely worth a try. it's only 2mm too long in theory, but the measurment is sloppy generally anyway +-1mm at least.
Also, the brake blocks are smaller than the rim surface, and if they do hang over the rim a tiny bit, it's not the end of the world.
You can always file away the block edge as you go along.

there are, even shorter drop Diacompe ones, which are rather rare, and a bit shit. Only ever seen one.
