  • Looking to buy a bike for short journeys around town, looking at the two mention in the title.

Any thoughts, advice would be welcome.

    Thanks

  • Genesis every time.

    Better parts

    Comfier saddle

Specialized stem/bar is one piece meaning you cant adjust it, or swap out bars.

Genesis has multiple braze ons for racks and mudguards

Genesis can handle a bit of the rough stuff, and is much better suited for the British weather.

Specialized is designed to look like a cool bike, but instead makes the user look like a fashion victim.

Ohh and check out this thread

  • those globe rolls have strange geom - the top tubes always look too long for a bike running flat bars. I'd go for the genesis.

Of course you could buy an iro or something for similar money.

  • Thanks for the advice, think ill take a closer look at both but I am leaning toward the genesis.

    Danke!

  • the globe roll also weighs a tonne. On the upside it has wierd bolts holding the wheels on, meaning they're harder to steal.

  • defonetly Genesis.

but there is quite a few other bikes wich are probly better and cheeper, probly be on that link above ^

i own a fuji classic track, think its cheeper than the genesis, fits brakes front and back, can fit a freewheel on the other side of the hub, few changes it a very good bike to get around, and you wount look like a "hipster"(hate that word), its a classy bike, light strong good geo, if you get it be ready to change the bars and pedals, maybe ratio...

  • To convert the Fuji in the way you're saying, e.g. buy brakes, levers, freewheel, perhaps a new bar, bigger tyres, you'd be way over the price of the Genesis.
I think the good thing about that genesis is that you can thrash it around tow paths and bridle paths as well, whereas the fuji would struggle over such terrain.

I have to say, if I had a spare 500 sheets I'd be adding one of those Genesis to my stable!

  • I have had a Genesis Day One Cross since feb and find it is the most used of my 4 bikes, as previously stated it can handle the rough stuff as I have gone along dirt tracks and 'off road' cycle paths. I have changed only the rear tyre to a Randonneur Trail which seams a good compromise to fast rolling on the road and grip on the looser stuff, the front is the stock knobblyish one. Gearing can be a little low but down here in hilly Cornwall the 42- 18 freewheel works just fine, also I changed the brakes to cantis- a bit controversial I know but the drop levers and Vs felt way too spongy for me. And I have a rear rack fitted with a front little rack that goes on the canti mounts for that utilitarian feel.

I bought this bike as an all rounder which is does heller well, your choice may depends really if you ride on road only or fancy a bit of 'off piste' as well.

    Hope this helps.

  • the langster steel is only £399.99 at evans at the moment

I think a move to cantis is a great idea - it would be my fist move, I reckon. I've never been great fan of V's.

  • I think the V's work fine great on the flat bar version, but cantis better on the drop bar

  • Not that its adding much but I took a day one out when they first brought it out (flat bar + cantis) and thought it was great. If I'd been in the market for an OTP I'd have definately chosen that over most of the other offerings (plug/langster/etc.). Judging from that and a spin on a friends geared Day something-or-other, I've got to say Genisis seem like good bikes.

Also surelyt the dayone looks a million times better?

    VS

...altho I still prefer the original:

  • 1+ on the Genesis every time.

Hell, I'd go as far as to says it's a modern equative of a path racer, it got the lots.

edit - whoop, confuse it with the Ridgeback Solo.

  • I ride the Globe roll 2 and it's taken me many a mile over the past year. Have no real complaints, although I'm fairly new to cycling and don't know much better

One thing though, the whiter than white grips don't stay white for long and will never return to their colour no matter how hard you clean them

  • ^get new bars they weigh about 2 kg...

  • Alternatively, this might be worth a look -

On-one pompino sport build is reduced to £399 at the moment, which is bloody good IMO :)

  • I second the new bars for the Roll suggestion.

I have a Roll 2 and it's been great for me once the seat was changed. I used MTB style bar ends for ages, but picked up a new stem and some Airwings from the classifieds. I could not believe the difference in weight between the new stem/bar combo and the stock all in one unit.

The roll isn't exactly light, but so far it's proved bulletproof and has served me well for everything from messing about on track to centuries.

ye i guess on rougher ground the genesis is better, but my fuji can still handle the canal, wich is a mixture of mud, potholes, gravel, still isnt to bad with my new 23c tires(comes with 25c wich are better) and my new slimmer harder seat

but i have been able to get the parts i sed pretty easy, bars £2, pedals from my old bike, brakes wer free, tires didt need to change but i had spair armadillos...

anyway :P rant over, the fuji and genesis are both better than the globe, but depends what your riding on...

  • A +1 for the genesis, definitely a better deal.

  • also think to change the parts on the globe to be as good as the genesis it will probly cost more

  • that globe is ugly as hell

  • OK thanks again for all the advice, it has really helped I have ordered the genesis which should be on the road in about a week. Think ill put some road tyres on it as I definitely won't be on toe paths, canals etc. Not sure what other changes I'll make until I have the thing in my hands.

  • Don't go for skinny road tyres though, at least 25c or more would be idea for everyday riding.

  • If anyone has, has noticed or when nelson's arrives does it have a braze on on the chainstay bridge for a mudguard. A picture of one would be even better, I saw one on a pic of the Aldine day one prototype but was wondering if it was on the standard production model.

  • had a globe roll 1 for over a year, my first fixie-
i found some components to b a bit shoddy but after a few upgrades i love it-

i changed the saddle straight away as its uncomfortable as hell and changed the flat bars to risers- grey specialized mondo tyres were as thin as paper so ditched them too.
