The main way cycling will evolve is it'll become even more brand focused.
There's a diminishing pool of decent recycleable old frames (Alu might not and Carbon won't age so well, or carry appeal) so eventually the brands will win.
If you wanted to be a militant cyclist you'd fight the brands by rejecting cycling and walking everywhere so as not to wear out your nice steel frame.
