Would you ride this ebay wheel?

  • I bought these mavic wheels on ultegra hubs on ebay described as 'good condition' for £82 inc. postage. The back one however has a dent in the rim which I'm very wary of riding on. The seller reckons it's not a misdescription but I think this is more than just cosmetic. Would others be happy to ride them? It's a shame as otherwise they are just lovely.

  • ^don't like

  • Not as catasprophic as being bent the other way, but even so…

  • it definately looks bent
i wouldn't be happy with that

    same

  • :s

  • not good, but it won't fail, i got loads of dents from mallet swipes on my polo wheels.

  • Was it mentioned on the listing? If you're not happy and you've gone as far as you can with the seller file a claim. I don't think it would fail, but good condition implies structurally sound to me.

  • Advert just said 'good condition' nothing more.

  • Oops! posted from husbands laptop :)

  • Just bend it back with wood/hammer or plyers or a vice or some shit. It's metal, it won't explode if you bend it.

It'll be structurally fine as is, but I'd rather it was straight so the tyre sits properly.

  • Also I'd be wary of the scratches more than anything (only if you're using a brake on the rim).

  • No, I would file a eBay/paypal dispute if the seller does not accept your request for a refund.

  • Ride it.

  • Looking at it again, the dent is F-ing tiny!

  • One more:

You can bend it out and ride it if you'd like to. Like Skoota said, I've dealt with a number of polo wheels with a bunch of these dings in them.

But if you're not happy, request your monies back.

  • +1

The only thing id actually worry about is the dented inside edge cutting the side wall of your tyre... id remove any sharp edges with a bit of sand paper.

  • if you decide to keep a less stressful way to iron out the ding is:

Cut two pieces of hardwood, approx 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 9", drill a hole at each end on the 1 1/2" faces, bolt together with 2" bolts and washers. clamp the bolts so that the 'press' will run along each side of the dented rim and just contact the dent. Tighten bolts slightly and run back over; repeat this closing the gap until the dent is gently massaged back to as near to the rim face as practicable. Seeing as the metal has been deformed it is likley that the profile will be raised. This you may have to accept because if you use a fine file to reduce the proud part of the profile too much of the clincher 'hook' or bead seat may be removed; you have to judge just how much metal can be removed without compromising the bead seat.

Or fuck 'em off and get a refund!

  • Is it a 650 wheel with the dent?

  • It's a 700c

  • I'm with Max and Shinscar on this - definitely fixable. OTOH, dented rims don't accord with my expectations of "good condition". Wear, fine. Damage, not fine. I'd probably just fix it and use it for a quiet life and not buy from that seller again without a lot of due diligence.

  • i would be extremely fucked off as the description stated "good condition"

then i'd probably sleep on it, bring out the hammer the next morning and tappy tap tap it out.

  • Mechanical opinion: The wheel is structurally fine, but tyres may not seat properly. So it should be carefully straightened.

Personal opinion: Thats had a decent knock, and is therefore not in good condition.

Mrs Smallfurry reckons that clip from Father Ted describes my work perfectly.

    Brilliant clip.
