  • Spin to win... It will improve your cadence and fitness. Otherwise why not just ride a geared bike if it's 20 straight country miles?

  • The important thing is to start to pull up with the front foot above the horizontal plain and push down with the back foot below the horizontal plain. Whilst shifting your weight sleightly forward.

Imagine you are looking at the drive side of the bike and the crank arms are the hands of a clock. When your front foot is at around 2 o'clock and your back foot is at 8 o'clock this is when you will try and catch it.

I just find it's more fun fixed, easier to chuck it about, easier to maintain speed (for me), feels like it's doing more good in terrms of fitness. Cadence is giong up over the months etc..

    Thanks for the answer.

  • geared bikes, and skidding on them are/is not cool.
    "fixies" and skidding is. Apparently.

  • When Dancing James acts like a dick, just read this. It will cheer you up:

    This is pretty good too:

  • Context does help, people will presume you're riding in London if you don't say otherwise, it's obviously a bit different.

You should definitely go down to 48/19 or similar. It will feel annoyingly spinny at first, but you will learn to spin faster, and yes, to skid, if that's what you want to do.

That was perhaps a bad choice, but why am I even explaining myself, the question has been answered.
    Thanks.

  • why do you want to skid in the cotswolds?
only farmers and grannies will see you not hipsters.

  • Farmers love telling people to do a skid.

at gunpoint as well no doubt - or are farmers more restrained these days?

Much more restrained, IME. Five year mandatory and all that. An acquaintance recently had the armed response plod turn up en masse after someone called in a man in camouflage carrying an assault rifle, for which read "smallholder potting rabbits with an air rifle with a black stock".

  • never bothered to learn to stop without braking.

My favourite sentence of the thread :)

I thought the mandatory five year was for unlicensed fire arms? Id imagine every farmer has a shotgun ticket.

  • Not totally sure, but I believe that possession of firearm with intent to cause fear of violence (ie the standard "get orf moi laahnd") may now attract the mandatory even with a licensed firearm. Certainly, it's not something people are much disposed to risk.

  • Today I finished my fixed gear conversion and to get used to it I went for a ride down my street, The only problem is I can't stop by resisting the rotation of the rear wheel!, I went up and down a few times and no matter how much I tried to slow the bike down the momentum of the crankset still pushed the pedals forward, sure this would be great for the track as you can coast to a stop but not ideal on the main road, thankfully I have installed a front brake

is this how everyone starts off please?, I aint weak but can I hell as like stop the bike by even standing up and putting as much pressure onto the pedals as possible

    please help

  • Keep pedalling.

HA HA HA HA HA sarcastic clap

    What ratio are you running?

  • What gear ratio are you running? How many teeth on the chainring & the cog?

  • 49t Primato and on the rear 18T

  • Have you installed proper foot retention?

  • do you have foot retention

please do some basic search regarding this

  • not yet I have them shimano pedals are cleated and normal on the other side

boy I could shift but if someone walked out in front they would have joined me !!

  • Once you've got your brake and foot retention, it's just a case of htfu and judging your speed/distance to obstacles.
    Foot retention comes first.

  • get foot retention

    learn to control your bike

any accidents you have are your fault if you cant even stop

  • Get a bigger cog at the back. Suggest a 25 tooth.

  • is it normal not to be able to stop the rear wheel and cranks turning, no way could I do either
