  • What kind of gearing allows for successful skid stops? I thought foot retention was all I needed, but all I can really achieve is a brisk slow down. I'm getting an unmachined front next week, and am concerned about stopping. Currently running 53/16, thanks.

    Gear ratio makes a difference but there is a skill to learn, foot retention is merely a tool

    If you cannot stop you are a danger to others (of serious concern) and yourself though if you are that selfish/ retarded I don't care if you are removed from the gene pool.

    Lower gearing and use a brake or expect no sympathy.

    People with a brain learn to skid whilst still having a brake. Most intelligent people still keep a brake.

    So I would be learning to skid whilst having a brake, I haven't mentioned removing said brake, and it will still work on the rim of the wheel I am getting. Thanks for the advice.

  • Gearing doesn't matter that much, it is just a case of unweighting the rear wheel by either hopping it up a bit and having wheel locked for when it 'touches down' or lean forward a bit and lock wheel.

    You are at around 90 gi (gear inches) at the moment, you'll destroy your knees and be unable to control your bike. If you went 53x20 (thus keeping your big ring), it would go down to around 70 which is what a lot of people ride.

  • sreiously man? learn to skid so that you can use it if required in an emergency.skidding (and using your legs) as a primary means of stopping the bike though? i realise there isnt a like for like corroloation but take a look at your rims and brake pads, appreciate how much mechanical force is required to slow your x kgs from your average speed/how much brake pad material sloughs off through friction with the rim/how much heat is generated and then have a think about whether you want to substitute the knees you have to walk with for the next half-century plus for your purpose designed braking apparatus.

  • 53 16? Really? For the track maybe but surely not around town. A novice who can't even skid will struggle to push that gear around. Do you like walking up hills? Or perhaps just walking in general? A mix of 47/48 with 17/18/19 will have you skidding into oncoming traffic in no time. I think the op is trolling and having a laugh.

    An explanation.
    I ride along an ex-railway line every day, about 20 miles to the end and back. I like to do this on the gearing I'm using as I can do it faster. I live in the cotswolds, small hills are no problem.
    I started riding on this gearing about 9 months ago as it was similar to the highest gear on my road bike. I always had a brake and never bothered to learn to stop without braking.
    That was perhaps a bad choice, but why am I even explaining myself, the question has been answered.

    ive got a bike that im running 54/16 on and i can skid. Although for a first timer get a
    different ratio and practice skidding on wet ground.
