• Hi, I am thinking to get a pair of full mudguards for my fixed bike (at the moment I have SKS Raceblades but I would like more protection). It is a 2006 Langster frame with ITM 4ever carbon fork and I run Marathon Plus 25 tyres so it is a bit tight. I have tree options:

1. SKS Chromoplastic, and trim them a bit at the brake area so they can fit
2. Crud RoadRacer
3. Condor guards, I have seen some flat shape full guards with similar fittings to SKS in last years Bike Show

Any ideas recommendations?

• I use the crud roadracer, they are very skinny so they fit nicely. the negatives they are fiddly to fit, rubbing on the tyres when its windy or going fast and the screws/nuts coming loose all the time!

• You have more than tree options. You probably have a whole copse of options.

Salmon aluminuim, flat but with an edge, work very nicely in small clearances. Hard to find though.

If money's an issue, chop down some cheaper SKS (or Zefals or others) than the Chromoplastics.

Slim wooden guards, there are some poeple on this forum selling ones they make.

But I reckon the Cruds will get the most love on here. I haven't used them.

• crud++

• ^ and fudges had em on sale last i checked 50% off

• Superglue all the screws in if you choose the Cruds, I lost the end bits off mine.

Quite flimsy as well, managed to snap both the front and rear guards eventually. I've just ordered SKS Raceblades to replace em.

• dude from crud is massively understanding though, if something goes wrong then get in touch and they'll generally sort you out. Note however that they are built to break in the event of anything jamming in them... which is generally a good thing, unless you like metal/carbon interaction beneath your bits.

amazing

• i'm after some new full length guards on the cheap. i gots steel giles berthoud ones on my main bike but i'm after something light, cheap and cheerful. found these at a bargainous £15 yesterday.

keep meaning to ask teenslain what those white ones with the flap and reflector on his old holdsworth are? i dig them.

edit. just ordered them sks commuter ones. bargain.

• they were vintage blumel lightweight celluloid guards.

• I love SKS chromoplastics.

REally safe, reliable, easy to fit. They come with quick releases so that they don't jam the wheel if something gets stuck between wheel and guard.

I tried Salmon guards, but they were the biggest pain in the bollocks to fit - we're talking Ed Scoble verses pinchflats style frustrations.

Oh, and they rattle loose.

• Dumb question of the day: How do you fit Crud Racers when you don't have a back brake?

• Only problem with SKS is that the rear bridge mount tends to fatigue and snap eventually. But it's easy enough to resecure with a cable tie.

It's happened on all 3 sets I've owned, but only on bikes that have done big winter training mileage.

• Crud sent me a couple of pairs of RoadRacers for the Cycle Show stand... I only need the 1 pair so the first person to dibs in this thread and who can collect tomorrow from near Condor (I'm at 100 Gray's Inn Road, which is above the Pret on the corner) gets a free pair.

put a zip tie through your brake bridge hole, tighten a bit, attach the zip tie on the mudguard through this, tighten them all. trim the other zip tie. Fanny's your Aunt.

• Maybe pistolero doesn't have a brake hole either.

If you do, you can also just use a nut. But the cable tie is full of win for an undrilled bridge.

SKS Chromo +1 from me. They've improved them a bit lately with new stay caps that don't fall off.

Salmons don't rattle loose if you use thread glue on the nuts, and really get the bridge clips nice and tight with a pipe wrench. Also, once you have fitted them once, they're not really any trickier to fit than any other guard IMO. I have heard they're a bit brittle and crack where they're drilled though, but I've never had that happen on either pair I've used and abused. Also I think they're quieter than any other guard I've used, since they never rub on the tyres when vibrations make your guards wobble side to side.

Those vintage Bluemels are look great but they're dead flexy and they crack like fuck with impacts. Just so happens that Dale's pair (formerly Joes, mine and snowy's) have been looked after OK. The fixings are rusted but I know Dale likes it like that, looks beaterish and less nickable.

• Velocio ill grab them, can collect tomorrow afternoon. :) bored of getting a wet arse

• damned. i snoozed and losed.

Sure thing, they're yours.

Just give me a call (number in the phone numbers thread) when you drop by... don't drop by between 12:30pm and 2pm as I'm in a meeting with the CEO. But any other time (early, later) is cool. I'll be there from before 8am.

• wakey wakey Damo! chers V ill give you a bell round 3:30 4ish as im on nights and can roll by before i start at 5, is that cool

• Yup, that works.

I like your work.

Nothing will save your arse from getting wet

• brave is incontinent, poor thing :(

You mean snost and lost.

+1 for SKS chromoplastic, my girlfriend has white ones on her bike for six months or so and they've been great, even though she throws her bike around. A massive improvement over the original steel ones (lighter, no rust, no rattling). I got the 700c ones which also fit a 3-speed 26 x 1 3/8 (ie 590mm) wheel.
