71mm BB?

Posted on
  • Seem to have myself a 70.5/71mm BB with One of the cottered cups is stuck in (locknut side)& I'd like to add a Rudge-Whitworth 48t cottered crank I've tried a standard English 68mm - doesn't tighten up fully, and the axle is left loose. the frame is an old 60's/7o-'s Sun Worksop
Any Ideas?? could it be an italian BB?
    Cheers

  • Italian BB with a spacer might work.

    Pics would help

  • II'll take some tonight.
    cheers

  • An Italian BB is 36x24 on both L/H and R/H side (with a 70mm Shell). British Thread is 1.37x24tpi. (68 or 73mm Shell)

I would suggest trying a looseball Raleigh 1" 3/8th x 26TPI BB and seeing how you get on. (these were 70mm Shell width)

  • face it down to 68mm ??

  • some old pics

to face it down, would you take 1mm off both sides rather than 2mm off one?

  • ye, but your lbs should know what to do.

  • Ive got a similar situation-Raleigh 1970s frame,cottered cranks,one cup still in.Not a budge out of it.
Would the drive side cup be loosened anti or clockwise?

  • as usual, sheldon has the answers (bottom of the article)
