Birmingham Bike Polo Meeting, Tues 14th September, 8pm, My House (Stirchley)
Confirmed Attendees:
- Danwentskiing
- Hyperallah
- 4ndy
- Dan_Lj
- Win$ton Green
- Mastershredder
Anyone else who plays polo, or wants to be more active in playing and/or organising polo events in the future is more than welcome (please message me for my address, or see me at work, or ask someone else who is coming).
Items on the agenda include:
How to grow Brum polo,
Throwing a Tournament,
Ideas to play more with the regions (I have a mini winter-league idea),
Courts...
When to do seeding.Any other suggestions, please comment here and I'll make some kind of agenda beforehand. There will surely be time to discuss stuff that comes up on the night, but mentioning it here first gives people a chance to think about stuff beforehand.
I reckon it'll last 1-2 hours. BYOB if you want a drink that isn't tea, coffee or water (I have loads of whisky if anyone wants that...)
If 8pm isn't convenient, let me know.

Oh, and after discussion at polo today:
**Regular Wednesday games will be at Calthorpe Park, at 7.30pm **
Due to the nights drawing in. If you want to get there at 7pm, (or even start at 6pm at Highgate if you want) do it by prior arrangement on the forum.
If anyone sees the irregular players who aren't on the forum very much, please mention it to them. Thanks.

i have one you can buy for less than what it cost to put together on account of it being fibreglass or graphite or carbon fibre or something and i don't know how strong it is. i've played with it once or twice, seems strong but flexes a bit - £5.

Sunday was good, need a sixth player next week
-
• #1108
i'm on for sunday, 4-6 is fine with me. shall we try to play during the skyride, or maybe play beforehand and then do the ride on our polo bikes, with flyers?

is that the one with the bent pole? if not I'll have it. blackhead or yellow?
-
• #1110
nah, it's a skinny black pole, brand new with a black head. as i say, it has a bit of 'give' in the shaft, but it's only really noticeable when you're leaning on it in goal for example. it's pretty light.
if you're playing on weds, i'll bring it along
-
• #1111
sweet. not playing wednesday but can pop over to pick up mallet or sundays fine, whichever you prefer.
-
• #1112
i'll be at home evenings except wed, so if you're around feel free to pop in. if not i'll bring it on sunday.
-
• #1113
If you have preference for a regular non-bendy mallet, you can swap it for mine.

How to grow Brum polo,
Sorry to chime in on something I have no involvement in, but Birmingham Bike Polo really needs its own website/blog that people can find easily and post comments on. Trudging through threads on a forum isn't ideal especially for non-lfgss members

you're totally right. i have a feeling this will feature during our intense discussions next tuesday.
ben threatened to make one at the euros, but i think he passed the torch onto fin, who may or may not be putting something on the bike foundry site.
saying that, i'm tempted to do it myself as i'm clearly the birmingham player most interested in writing about polo online... how difficult is it to put together a blog? i looked at the wordpress site and it scared me a little bit....
being first result for 'birmingham bike polo' on google would be a good idea.

its ridiculously easy to create pages, upload photos etc
i registered birminghambikepolo.wordpress.com a few months ago and offered it to Fin, but if you want it just join wordpress and i'll pass the account admin over to you.

I just completely forgot to get anything sorted. I think you'd do a better job of it anyway Dan.

My mate Jake made an electronica track about bike polo inspired by seeing the London open. His 'stage name' is Beatloafe.
It's here: http://soundcloud.com/beatloafe/tap-out

Regarding the Bham Bike Polo site - we've got a page on our Bike Foundry site dedicated to it: http://birminghambikefoundry.org/bike-polo.html but at the moment it's mainly aimed at making people aware of the concept and passing them onto this forum. We could always add a message board element beneath a brief introduction to the rules and a photo, although it would probably take a few days for us to get our heads round the CSS sheets.
Do people think that would be a good venue for these discussions? If so I can get on it.

my opinion is that there is so much momentum behind this forum, that starting another one would be futile; witness http://www.birminghamfixedgear.com/#/forum/4541260786
it's great that the bike foundry is promoting polo (particularly to younger people) but i'd like to see a separate and dedicated blog with loads of photos, player info, tournament reports, advice on mallet-making, bike adaptations etc.
i'm totally happy to be in charge of it, although it would be much better if it was open to 'the regulars' to contribute to whenever they feel like it.

FRIENDLY REMINDER:
Polo is at Calthorpe Park, 7.30pm from tonight until next spring (boohoo).
(Please try to be prompt - it's a team game and it causes less aggro from locals when they can see we are actually playing a game, not just fucking around).

I think I'm coming to shoot some shots, but don't hold me to it
-
• #1125
I should clarify that I mean photo shots, not polo shots
yeah, i'll be there so long as it isn't raining and the ground isn't sopping wet.
