I've got 37mm Randonneurs Trail on an old Freddie Frubb made for 27' wheels and they're fine on dirt.
Just have to make sure the rear nuts are tightened up at all times, because the axle tends to creep up in the dropouts slightly and there's not much clearance left (maybe 2mm on both sides).
