  • Vitamin C, along with all of the B vitamins are water soluable. As such mega dosing is pointless as your body will quickly excrete any exess out of your bloodsteam.
    Please note, this is incorrect.
Your body will excrete all traces out of your system, this is why you need to ensure a daily intake of B & C vitamins.

This error does not change the fact that Mega Dosing is pointless though.

  • I feel like crap; glands swollen, tired and achy, sniffling.

    this ^

plus i get this infuriating gravity-related sinus/nasal passage thing that stops me sleeping. basically if i'm anything less than 100% tip-top shape, evey time i lie down my left nostril seals shut like an airlock. the remaining one can't intake sufficient air to maintain restful sleep so i end up whistling, wheezing, mouth-breathing and and waking up evey 10 minutes with mouth like sandpaper and a headache. it's really very annoying. i haven't slept properly since last thursday.

For most people, yes. But for supreme athletic specimens such as myself..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_C_megadosage#Common_cold

The results of three meta-analyses show that vitamin C in doses ranging from 200 mg to 2 grams per day reduce duration, but not incidence, of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_cold by 8% for adults and 14% for children. Incidence appears to be reduced by 50% in stressed adults such as soldiers or athletes in extreme, cold environments. The clinical significance of these effects is uncertain, but the biological effect appears genuine.[8][18]
    A 2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochrane_Collaboration concluded:[19]

[INDENT] The failure of vitamin C supplementation to reduce the incidence of colds in the general population indicates that routine prophylaxis is not justified. Vitamin C could be useful for people exposed to brief periods of severe physical exercise. While the prophylaxis trials have consistently shown that vitamin C reduces the duration and alleviates the symptoms of colds, this was not replicated in the few therapeutic trials that have been carried out. Further therapeutic RCTs are warranted.

  • i've been wrecked since the week before last, thought the cold was clearing up but it made a comeback yesterday. i blame the warm damp weather

    1. Good sleep.

    2. Excersice.
To keep your immunity up, when you exercise, do so for less than 1 hour. More than 60-90mins can deplete your immune system, while less than an hour boosts it.

  • Unless you're doing that less than an hour drunk, semi-naked at 95% max.

  • In the ten years that Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones was addicted to heroin he never once had the common cold.

  • I read somewhere once (it could have been the back of a toilet door) that simulating a fever can help.

So if I feel a cold coming I go and sit in a sauna with some water for as long as I can.

Don't know if it works but I haven had to take a (genuine) day off sick in a while

Hot and humid atmospheres are the best environments in which to encourage the spread of cold viruses (virii?)

Can you please tell me which sauna you use so that I can make sure I never go anywhere near it? TIA

Smack is cheaper than Vit C and Zinc supplements too. Win!

    True. And funny.

But you get my point - avoid longer strenuous sessions if you are trying to keep well and healthy in the week running up to an important event.

  • Half the people I trained this weekend had colds and today I feel like crap; glands swollen, tired and achy, sniffling. Urgent need for the toilet.
    Yippee.

Do you have a picture of your swollen glands we can take a look at ?

Oh Object ! You vitamin racist . .

    Ascorbyl palmitate is fat soluble.

But, you are right that most ascorbic acid ends up down the toilet, but the point (or hypothesis at least) is that you megadose up to that point - where you should have reached cell saturation.

  • Where do I send the pics of the swollen glans?

    Host them at:

  • O...kie ... what kind of bottle??

    Tiny tiny bottle.

  • Tiny tiny bottle.

Tiny Tiny bottle. For a tiny tiny person!

This is one of the very reasons why mega dosing is recommended by certain dieticians/spots coaches and such. Excess is excreted so it wont do you any harm, but if you need extra amounts of these substances because you are ill, pregnant, growing, working your tits off etc, it may help you maintain a better state of health and recovery.

  • I find that having children, you are doomed to endless colds..... my little darlings sometimes look at me and I wait for them to say something nice, only for them to sneeze straight in my face - and two days later, I have their cold..... love em

  • I don't like taking pills tablets, used to take some whale oil or whatever you call it. Anyway, I started riding everyday last September, when I had a work where I would ride hard through traffic, carrying a 10kg backpack, sweat like a pig, then undress, stay in a cold room for about an hour, then put the wet clothes back on, ride hard through traffic for 15 minutes. When it got colder in November, I got a bad cold. Week later, wanted to keep riding, got another one, a month out of life, the swine flu, or was it bird?
Then rode through the whole winter and nothing, I felt great even in -25C. Since then, I've been eating garlic every evening (I LOVE GARLIC) and drinking warm water with honey and half a lemon. Now, it's getting chilly, again, and I'm getting a cold, anyway...

So what's the use? Don't do anything, you either will or will not get a cold, end of story.

  • Try combining a fizzy echinacea tablet (which you can get from Holland and Barrett) plus a Berocca tablet, topped off with a shot of vodka and a dash of tobasco.

If it doesn't cure/stop the cold, it'll probably give you an epic outbreak of the sh1ts and then you won't even be thinking about the cold. Plus, if you go out riding with sed sh1ts, you will likely be able to join the 'big-ring-riding' * crew (although do make sure to wear white lycra shorts for emphasis)

*please note, you friends may assume that you have joined the rival to this group: the 'loose-ring-riding' crew

  • I have the Mother Bastardlode of colds, caught from a friends child on Saturday, manifested Sunday, broke cover on Monday and fruited on Tuesday like a vile pustule filled invasive sack of phlegm from Hell.........never have I felt so fucking ill in my entire puff

I hacked up the thickest greenest shit this morning - freezing cold, yet burning up, head feels like it's in a vice, sore throat, chest, runny nose.....fucking ace.

Beecham Flu Plus don't fucking work I know that much.....

  • Drink hot milk with honey and crushed garlic. THis is also good as a precaution althpough clearly, this has an acquired taste:)
Once you're ill it's also good to sweat it out during night, put some warm stuff on, sleep ubder double bedding, in the morning you should be better.
Having said that, I still haven't figured out how to avoid cold altogether.

  • Take a- bed with a 1/2 bottle of Scotch. Worked for my grandfather, and works for me. Really, try it.

(You have to drink the Scotch by the way, not just sleep with it or try to shag it).

  • Something else to remember, you pick up these germs everywhere, don't eat or even rub your eyes or pick your nose unless your hands are clean.
You go around all day touching doors and railings that other filthy, diseased humans (and worse, children) have had their germy mitts all over, even the soap dispenser in the public toilets.

I have avoided several colds I'm sure by using an anti-bacterial gel on my hands before eating when out at work or whilst traveling.
