BB size/type for an old Colnago frame?

Posted on
  • Hi guys!

I'm building a bike for a guy I know and it doesn't have a BB. It's a Colnago frame, but I'm not sure of the year/name since it's been repainted before he bought it.

I need a square tapered BB, but can you give me a tip on which type and size of BB I would need, or how I should measure it to know the size? Thanks in advance!

  • If it's reasonably modern then it'll probably take a standard Italian threaded BB. I have a 1996 Master Olympic and that uses a normal 70mm wide, 36mm x 24 TPI with right-hand thread on both sides.

  • As Mudd said, the actual BB shell will be Italian threaded i.e. 36mm x 24TPI and 70mm wide.
The axle length which is equally important will be dependent on the cranks you are using, as will the tapers (ISO or JIS) of the axle.

  • Colnago = Italian Thread :)

For the length, it depends which cranks you're using :)
