• After a few hundred kilometres on my White Industries track hubs, the front wheel has developed some lateral play (about 1-2 mm at the rim).

What is the process of removing this play?

  • What spoke pattern has it got?

Radial can, even on good hubs, pull the bearing housing apart so the outer race is loose. Happened to me with a royce hub radial laced.

  • i suggest you to take it apart clean everything wwell and see if there is any damage to the hub itself, axle or the bearings. if not, refit all properly and check it out. come back with the outcome so that we could all think about the further actions.

  • I had same problem on rear hub.
I bought new cartridge bearings off the internet, removed old ones (which were fucked) put in new ones adjusted nuts and its perfect now.

  • Having a fiddle (TM*) with the "cones" -top hat probably a better term, but anyways- if you can remove the play and the hub stays smooth then the cones/top hats have wriggled loose, if you can't adjust out the play then the cartridge bearing are probably shagged, needing replacement.

Spoke tension can (as per 36X18) open up a hub a fraction and give slackness- this has been noted for example on the Zipp site. Similarly a good mechanic will allow a little slackness when the hub is not quick released into a road set-up as the q/r reduces (by a tiny tiny amount) the distance between the cone so taking the slack out.

Zipp leave a fraction of slop in their bearings when they are not rider-loaded which can be a little disconcerting- the rule of thumb is rather leave a fraction too much slack than risk over tightening.

    Good luck.

  • generally speaking, once sealed cartridge bearings develop play, it means whack them out and replace them. even if you can pop the seals, clean and re grease and put back together, it wont make any difference to the play. they are non adjustable, and built to have zero play. once play develops, they are feducked. go to your local bearing stockist with one and show them the code and get new ones, easy pie, though not always cheap. better seals cost more but reduce ingress of water and shite (good for hubs) and should last longer.

however, i'd say its weird that they have knackered so soon. a few hundred k is not much for a bearing. call white ind or the distributer. chances are they specced less sealed (and less drag) bearings if its a track specific hub. if you use it on the road, they'll get ruined quicker. i love the simplicity of cartridges, but love the servicability of cup and cone.

    good luck.

  • According to White Industries site the bearings are 6902-2rs so you could get them online if you don't have a local bearing shop (I know I don't).

The 2RS also means two rubber seals (both sides sealed) so they are fine on the road. Shouldn't cost much either (around £5)

  • you can get away with running single seals, as long as they are both on the outside

  • The lateral movement has increased, so I assume something need tightening/servicing.

I have laced the (White Industries) hub radially to Velocity Deep V rims.

I haven't previously serviced track hubs. Any suggestion on how to take it apart? More importantly, how do I replace the bearings?
