• Not sure if people have heard about this one but it's on tomorrow:

    http://www.theknutsfordgreatrace.co.uk/

80 Teams on Penny Farthings racing round Knutsford. A few folks are riding down from here, unfortunately I'm still at least a month of riding so going to have to get the train (you can go direct from Stockport) but it's only 5 mins walk from the station.

I met one of the organisers up at the Debdale Park festival at the start of the month. He had a small selection of his bikes from the Warrington Bike Museum on display and was kind enough to let me have a go on an 1860's front wheel drive bike.

  • Note for those going by train. It looks like there is engineering work on the Chester line but direct trains from Stockport are still running.

Direct trains from Stockport are only every 2 hours (11:31, 13:31 etc.)
Coming back again, every 2 hours. (15:49, 17:49 etc.)

Best to phone and check if you're looking at using the Chester services to get there or back.

  • Is there a way of contacting the riders of the race? I am looking for a Penny Farthing and it's rider to be all Dickensian on the 11th of December in Berwick-Upon-Tweed for the Dickensian Christmas Market there. It's not been easy to find someone. Any leads appreciated.

  • at the "bicycle village" a month ago, hosted by, i think, the guy who runs the bike rental around the back of Jacksons Boat
there were several immensely interesting ancient bicycles including a penny farthing (and rider) . so, go to jacksons, talk to the guy and he might still have their details.

alternatively there is a penny farthing at the science and industry museum, in the aviation shed

  • Might be able to get some info from the guy here http://www.cyclemagic.org.uk/cyclehistory.aspx it's not exactly local, but might be worth a shot...

  • Roger at cyclemagic defo worth a shout. Try Steve at Coventry Transport Museum also, or Doug Pinkerton in Halesowen, or finally the folks at the National Cycle Museum, Llandrindod Wells - all could help with contacts closer to Berwick.

Bit closer but sketchy - at the start of last years ToB in Rochdale there were the North West Vintage Cyclist assoc or something similarly named, also similar at Chorlton Green Festival, both tenuous leads if you get desperate. I should really keep contacts and business cards updated, sorry.

  • There's also this coming up, might be able to find someone there? http://www.mosi.org.uk/whats-on/retro-bicycle-picnic.aspx
