As for bags, I have a ltd addition howies timbuk2 bag (Identical design to a medium timbuk 2), really hard wearing (2 years use and 2 pretty big spills and still going strong), very waterproof (commuting in Edinburgh and no issues). Can be a bit loose and swingy if it ain't quite full with something. You definately need the shoulder pad if your doing anything with a bit of distance. There is no back padding so you have to pack accordingly and I could prob do with a slightly bigger bag but that's just personal. Got mine on sale so was a bargain and very happy with it. Mate of mine got an old bag off a posty, absolutely huge and he loves it so that is an option, will require some work to make it bike friendly, mainly just a x strap mind
