It is quite bumpy, I rode in on an mtb and the GF of the time (2002) hired one from bridge cycle hire (which we were able to take away and use for other rides).
I did see some people struggling on road bikes, some bits really chop up, but fixies hadn't been invented back then so MTB was the only serious choice.
She'll enjoy it a LOT more on something with fat tyres.
