Just took deliver of my rear wheel and wanted to thank you for the build (good and true). Am truly chuffed, wheel looks great.

You can still run brakes on unmachined wheels and you will gradually wear out the painted surface. At least my previous 2 pair of Arayas used to come unmachined and running brakes on them was not a problem at all.
I assume machined means they have a brake surface and unmachined means they can't be used with brakes?
Noob question sorry

Would they not squeel to oblivion?

I run brakes on a non-machined wheelset from Varno. They work perfectly, and don't squeal TOO much; in fact, the disc brakes I had on a mountain bike were louder.
My LBS suggested I use Odyssey's clear pads, which are a bit softer than standard. They seemed to think they would leave the paint on for a little longer. We shall see.

so do the 40mm rims not have a flat bit at all for brakes? Surely on an unmachined rim the brake is rubbing against an angle (the V shape)....kind of like this []---> V <---[] (where [] is a brake block and V is the rim and the arrows represent the direction of movement)
Some more questions:
Do the 40mm come in silver? Can the Pegasus decals be easily removed?
Sorry about all the questions....free bumps I guess! -

Nope... Use soft compound pads :) Dura-ace is my choice, but they do hurt the pocket :)

NMSW means it has a braking surface but it's just not machined. There are however rims which are " V " but you could still run a brake but it is not that much surface contact between pad and rim. Gradually, there will be more contact once your pad goes [---> V <---/]
I still prefer NMSW whether I am gonna run a brake or not, machining the walls makes it thinner and thus wears out faster :)

The Pegasus have a flat section for the brakes but its not machined, so they are parallel [] not \/. They come in black and white only and the stickers are easily removable...V.

ok so brakes will definately be fine with the pegasus...cheers for that!
Varno, I am currently shopping around but at the moment it is likely I will get back to you on this - cracking deal for handbuilt wheels -

spotter has been running a front brake on his pegasus front rim for a while now, im sure he'll be along to verify that its been ok
-
• #161
I can verify that the front brake works fine on the non machined surface - not so hot in the wet though, as you would expect from a smooth braking surface.
The lacquer wears through pretty quickly.

I dont think you will get a better deal elsewhere. I got some of evilBay some time ago for my beater bike, slightly cheaper but not as nice as V.'s

just enquired on the 40mm rims via email....just been reading the posts; bit worried about the 40's not having a machines brake surface? would carbon spec brake block work better and cause less wear? how long does it take for the alloy to start showing throught the worn paint?
really want deeper rims as they SHweeeeeeTT!! -

Another happy customer here too
got my 40mm Pegasus on Quando hubs yesterday put them on last night and they must have increased my speed by 10mph!* riders speed increase may vary, speed increase not guaranteed.
excellent build, was kept informed of build time and postage dates by email - I got the quando hubs as a temporary measure as I would like to eventually relace them to some Dura-Ace or Suzue Promax - but the quando hubs are pretty solid and should last a long time with the proper maintenance.

Hey varno. Roughly how long is your turnaround from order to door? Very interested in those 40mm's!! Cheers
-
• #175
Usually about a week mate....
You can either with brakes but a machined rim is built specifically for the blocks to engage on as you will eventually take the surface off with prolonged use.
