Mixing hubs

  • Thinking of getting some wheels made but wondering about hubs. I'm using a track hub for the rear but noticed that if you use road hub for the front you can save 100g plus in wheel weight.

Aside from the aesthetics, are there good reasons not to do this?

  • It's simpler to lock, no doubt. QR on the front wheel, wheel pops off and locks with the rear and frame, simples.
A road front hub is actually more adequate for a commuting bike, used on the road. If you're talking about commuting.

  • Thanks. Yes, it's a fixed bike for road use. I figured I could match a nice road front hub with the same maker's track/fixed one for the rear and save a bit of weight. My last bike got nicked so security is important. Also, out here, if you want take your bike on a train you must remove the front wheel so QR would be handy.

Chances are are a road hub will have better sealing anyway. The dimensions are the same, so why not. I have a SS 29er with a bolt-on rear, and a quick release front. No point in making life more difficult then it needs to be.

  • much thanks. sounds like a plan.

  • I've never understood why people don't do this - road hubs are designed for the road...

I got Phils because they're impervious to rain, grit and Kryptonite.

  • Track hubs generally have high flanges. This improves the rigidity and energy transfer that 28c randos* sap.

So a heavier hub to increase rigidity, coupled with a heavier tyre to reduce it again.

    Makes sense ;)

  • mismatched hubs could be really dangerous, if your front hub runs slower than the back the bike may bend or snap

if the rear one drags more than the front it could stretch and then snap or behave like a slinky when you apply the front brake

  • If you build a typical pair of track hubs, into two of the same rims, using the same pattern, and number of spokes. You can usually get away with order all the same length of spoke. Which should be cheaper.

  • ^ is that true or just a massive lie?

Only skim read your post the first time, upon re-readed the mental image of a bike 'slinkying' is fucking brilliant!

Worked for me (Ambrosio track hubs, laced 32 spoke 3x to CXP 33).

Actually worked with a geared wheelset, some SLX center lock hubs, laced 32 spoke 3x to Halo ExciteR rims.

Would have worked on a SS 29er wheelset too, only the standard disc mount causes slightly more dishing on the front wheel that those centre lock, had to get some 2mm shorter spokes (ended using a differently butted spoke on the disk side anyway).

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Feck I'm dull.

The bendy buses did'nt work. Not sure bendy fixie skidders will be better recieved.

  • a fixie bender?

  • Flexi fixies.

    Silly Sausage.

You'll frighten lurking n00bies into buying a mountain bike.

  • I have a fixie bender flexi fixie.... it's amazing. Track hub (goldtec) at the rear for speed and a dmr revolution BMX front hub for tricks.... as long as I can hold a wheelie I go really fast.

(this is of course jokes, but the dmr hub is really smooth and quite light)
