  • For the engineers out there, I have just been accepted to two assessment centres which are clashing and so I have to chose 1. They are 2 very different jobs, one as a field engineer drilling holes for oil and gas and the other would be a design engineer designing and analysing stuff that goes 1000s of metres under the sea in horrendous conditions etc.

The field engineer position is for a company called Schlumberger who are a oil and gas services company that basically come along and make big holes in the ground for BP and shell etc etc. Could end up getting posted anywhere in the world but work conditions aren't meant to be the best and job security can be dependent on the markets.

The design engineer position is with a company called FMC technologies. The job will be based in Dunfermline in Fife, it will be a normal working week 9 - 5 stuff and with the added chance to travel.

I'm struggling to chose at the mo, I have already spoken to both parties and there are no additional assessment centres so it's really a matter of choosing. What the fuck do I do?

I've a friend who's worked with Schlumberger since he graduated, in 1990. He did a few years in their marine division and then transferred to their IT function due to a health problem. He's been waiting to be made redundant for the past 8 years or so but is still there.

I lived in Dunfermline as a kid, and we've long standing family friends from there, I'd be in no rush to go back.
