  • im in for tomorrow, i cant walk but i should be able to cycle!

  • I'm verging on returning, and I'd like to come to the beginners session first to ease myself back in... But I just remembered - Tuesdays are no good for me cos I dont finish work until 8pm, and I'll be back to my normal hours next week. Wouldnt get to Quorn Road til 8.30pm at the earliest (esp. on the polo gear!) and I presume with the fading light that you guys are wrapping it up around that time?

  • I'm down. You still want that ski pole?

  • It is indeed Heythrop University, we have right outside us a hiring station (30 seconds away) so that covers that aspect and we have a tennis court (hopefully) to play on

You can play on any bike, but the Boris Bikes weigh a ton...

  • You also need to wait 5mins before you can undock another bike.

  • heythropbikepolosoc, I left 5 helmets in my old place, Gabes lives there now, they are for the Assoc, but if you ask nicelly, they may left you use them

  • i too will head do quorn

been a while since i've played (apart from the malletless suicide attempt at riks tap-out)

  • the disc is there to protect the spokes, so putting the disc in the inside defect the purpose of it.
the design is NOT the main purpuse of the disc

now, question, if everybody have it outside.... everybody is doing it wrong? no one before me have think lots about the best way to fix the discs?

    hey rik!

I was joking about the design being the most important thing :-) But it's good to know the real purpose - i thought it was to stop the balls going through...

  • i'll be in tomorrow too

  • hey rik!

I was joking about the design being the most important thing :-) But it's good to know the real purpose - i thought it was to stop the balls going through...

various purpose, protect the spokes, integrity of the wheels is for me the biggest ones, follow by dont let the ball go through, even with 48 spokes. Other people say that the opposite teams can see the ball when you dribble if they are in the other side of the wheel. Obliviously the design space is to be use.

  • Hey Wicksie, I'm looking to start a bike polo soc at uni, roughly startin september 2010, don't suppose you'd be willing, if i popped over to east london, to show me the ropes? I haven't played before properly and have basically no equipment to hand (I lie, I have one child's hockey stick and three helmets and plan to use the hire bikes) so basically any help would be brilliant! If this works out well, there should be a new court opening for play in kensington!

    Hi there.

Sorry for the late reply, I"ve been out riding my bike. :)

Firstly, I think the boris bikes would be terrible to play polo on. Apart from them being the heaviest bikes known to man and the turning circle as big as a polo court, if you damage these things the fee is something astronomical like £450. It is of course up to you though.

I'm not sure where your uni is, but is there any way you can get down to SE5?
I'm not sure of the merits of spending an evening 1 on 1 with me and then you going off to teach other people.
You don't HAVE to do beginners polo and since it's a new thing there are plenty of people who went straight to throw ins. If you can make to one of the east / north polo sessions then I'm sure someone there would help you out. They're all very lovely people.
Or, if you give me a while I SHOULD have a loaner bike you can borrow.

Ski poles: go and ask a ski place nicely if they have any old poles they don't want. Or (not graphite) golf clubs are fine too. I even have someone use a broom handle, granted it only lasted a couple of games but that's better than nothing.

I also have a 54cm helmet if you want it.

Failing all this I might be able to a one off session to show you all the ropes, but I'm not the best teacher as there are far better players out there than me.

Good luck with it all, let me know what I can help with.

  • POLO tonight!

I STILL haven't done the loaner because I can't get the BB out or drill the brake bridge. :-S
I have another one I"m working on but can't get the stem bolt out and it rides like a clown bike. Sigh.

So, let me know who wants mallets and who wants to go at 6.30pm for a pre-game tap around.

  • woo polo!!!
urmmm joni... could you possibly bring me a loaner mallet, as the current loaner mallet is at my papa's house, while im currently having a duvet day at my mamas. be assured that it is safe and sound, and ill get a new mallet ver soon.
i can also be ther for 6.30 for early sesh

  • A mallet for each house huh. No worries.

    Why can't you walk?

  • urmm just got back from reading, where the mud was ridiculous, and i have more blister than feet at the moment

  • Ah, I see. No sympathy then.

    See y'all at 6.30pm.

    POLO!

  • yeah, in for 6:30, lovely day for it

  • In for 6.30 too... Maybe earlier! :)

  • Wanna come help me with bikes first Louie?

    :)

  • Just back from fracture clinic. Not healing so good. Wont be back for a while yet :-(

  • Ah shit Kev, that's sad news mate.
Take it easy, polo will always be here.

  • Wanna come help me with bikes first Louie?

    :)

    Sure... Drop me a pm/text...

  • havent seen louie for timage! woo

  • Wicksie,
I've got a mallet but I'd like to try out other lengths etc so not sure if its worth me borrowing one of yours or i could possibly try other's out (no idea what length mine is which doesn't help much)?
I'll be down about 7.30 this eve so see u there!

  • Thanks Joni, it is frustrating though, was doing a few minor improvements to the bike in anticipation of returning... probably wont make a quorn road session now.
I suppose it'll be back in the car park in the coming weeks...?
