  • Castrol GTX, tip inside frame, swill around, drain excess.

    PROTECTED

  • Mikec, very lucky escape.

    ...that shit's fucked up...

Speaking of which, flounced, or just disappeared?

  • Castrol GTX, tip inside frame, swill around, drain excess.

    PROTECTED

not completely, the corrosives from chroming will probably remain. But yea, it will be better protected from rust.

  • Cheers guys! Yes I did have a lucky escape. I have purchased those other chrome ones from ebay. I figure they will be good for at least a year when I plan to replace the whole bike anyway. I bought the frame and forks about 2 1/2 years ago but I think they had been around for a while before I got hold of them. Good tip about the Castrol GTX though.
    Tube to work tomorrow :(

  • That was sooooooooooo lucky that you took it apart... could have ended bad! I'm glad your ok! I'm going to check my bike over tomorrow ..its made me a bit nervous!

  • similar thing happened to me a few months ago, was trackstanding at a traffic light and the front end just didn't feel right. Decided I'd pop to Mosquito bikes to tighten the headset as that was the only thing I could think may be wrong. Headset was tight as it could be, weird, cycled the rest of the way home where undid the stem to narrow down where the problem was, I undid the front brake again to narrow things down to find the steerer tube and the fork legs come apart in my hands, completely rusted through, the only thing keeping me from eating the tarmac on the way home was the brake bolt. Thanked those lucky stars that night I'll tell you!

  • Mike, good job finding that before anything happened.

    hhhmmm nice. May get these

I hope it's not really 50mm rake like it says on the listing, or you'll have a pretty quick handling bike with 50mm rake + 74 head angle!

  • Mike. Really pleased that you checked.

I saw that too, let's hope it's a mistake in the listing.

  • Fuck

    Terrifying

Glad you found out, at the speeds you go that would not have been fun.

I had my scratched carbon forks replaced on Friday, part of the Serotta crash protection insurance, they have upgraded the forks gratis as well, the bike feels much stiffer and more responsive.

  • +1 for bike maintenance. Every cloud.

  • I saw that too, let's hope it's a mistake in the listing.

Oh. What would it mean if it wasn't, Im confused. I thought it probably meant 50mm of thread on the steerer tube? My broken forks go forward a lot at the end though

  • blimey mike, a very lucky escape.

    Obligatory Sheldon link on fork rake;

    http://sheldonbrown.com/gloss_ra-e.html#rake

Most modern forks have a rake of 43-47 mm. 50 mm is quite a lot and will increase the trail of your frame which should, if my understanding of these things is correct, make your steering a little slower than before.

I'd try it and see. You can always sell the forks on if you don't get on with them.

  • that could have been very very nasty, good checking Mike

Yeah, that is quite a rake, the original forks are probably 40mm odd, probably won't matter a toss on the road for commuting.

  • Yeah its not for racing or anything. My new route to work is so hilly too, I wont need to worry about any super quick handling :)

  • Well my new forks arrived and they look nice and shiny. I have a question though. Where the crown race sits, on the old forks it was smooth but these are threaded. Does this means I need to buy a new crown race - a threaded one - or can I smack the old one on :S

    Thanks

  • never heard of a threaded crown race before??
    weird

  • never heard of a threaded crown race before??
    weird

At least you had a bit of warning before it snapped! Carbon riders dont have that luxury.

  • huh?

  • Like so

  • that is unusual, just try putting your race on there and see what happens, if it's tight it should be ok.

  • Thanks for the help. I may take it to cycle surgery at lunch time and get them to smack one on :)
