when we lived in Nashville, we had one salary (scientist post doc wages, so not really a salary at all...) between the two of us. i've never been so poor or so skinny. it's not something i'd like to go back to. we cooked everything, tupperware is your friend, recipes that called for a chicken breast each (for example) became a recipe with one chicken breast between 2.
PB&J became PB&banana, honey, and a bit of muesli in a tortilla (cheaper).
erm. that's a bit of a ramble. bt it's possible not to have to eat JUST PB&J when broke. just.
