Sturmey Archer 5 speed

  • While single speed is very fun and all I am missing gears a bit, as my need for my bike have changed a bit (need to carry more shit with me). After playing around on the gf's Pashley Princess Sturmey 5 speeds, I think I'd love to get one of these fitted to my Plug Grinder.
I'm still a novice when it comes to anything technical with bikes so forgive me if any of the following questions are dumb!

Firstly I used the Sheldon Brown gear calculator to work out what gear inches I could get, and came up with the combination of 42/22 (currently 42/16) would give me the following:
    82.5, 68.7, 51.5, 38.7, 32.2
Does that sound like a decent spread?

Currently I'm running 42/16, and if i go for 42/22 this would mean needing to lengthen the chain by a bit, right?
Also do I need to worry about the sprockets position in relation to the chainring, or will this be the same width on the Sturmey compared to my current hub?

Sturmey list the Over Locknut Dimension as 113.7, I'm guessing that i will just need a few washers to bump that figure up to 120mm to fill the space on my frame...

Lastly I should be able to get it built up into a wheel just using my existing 700c rim right?

Again sorry if these questions seem really stupid, but I'm learning as I go!

    Cheers.

  • yes to all. You answered your own questions.

  • It will have the right chainline. the sprocket is dished and you can flip it round should you need to. Which you probably won't.
I would go for a tooth or two less on the sprocket to give you a top gear in the early 90s

Good to hear, just wanted to double check incase I had missed something glaringly obvious.

    wasn't it called 5th Gear themdays ?

  • Sturmey X-RF5 hubs are usually 36h or 28h for folders, so depends on your rim if you can reuse it or not.
Respacing is usually ok but can give problems with gearchanging if it's overdone.
http://oldbiketrader.co.uk/display_Sturmey_Archer.php?options=newhubspost has the hubs for sale at £75 + del.
He knows a ton about sturmey hubs, and is very helpful, you can call him on 020 8306 0060.
I've no connection at all with the above business.

I ocassionally use a fixed S3X 3-speed hub with a WI freewheel if I feel like lazy riding on the local hills. This hub takes a standard Shimano cassette cog(use Surly cogs, they fit better) for fixed, or a standard threaded freewheel.
