Most hotmail users use webmail, you will get the IP of a hotmail server.
However if he uses outlook/windows mail/pine/other mail client you may get his IP
As others have said it's the last 'hop' thats hard to trace - you will get the bt exchange no problem as penultimate hop (although depending on fabric used you may not, i.e if on NTL you may get a cabinet 20 miles away or further)
Once you have the IP though you can find the ISP who bought that range
Now the problem you have is the fucker is fully aware of this thread - sending anything to that mail address that is even remotley suspect will get you nowhere
bottom line - go to the police station, harrass them - get them to do something, hastle them daily, hourly. Even if the poster on gumtree does not have your bike you need to find out who he/she is.
